La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team used a pair of first half goals to earn a 2-1 victory over Luther College (Iowa) Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll and ranked third in the North Region, improve to 5-2-1 on the season. Luther (Iowa) drops to 1-5-3 on the year.
The Eagles, winners of four straight overall, took a 1-0 lead at 27:42 on
Maya Schmitt's first goal of the season, assisted by
Cassie Handrick. UWL made it 2-0 at 32:24 with Handrick scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the year.
Alex Cording recorded the assist.
Luther (Iowa) cut the lead to 2-1 at 45:59 on Marta Springer's second goal of the year. The Norse were held to three shots the remainder of the game.
UWL totaled 18 shots, including 10 on goal. Handrick and
Margaret Harings each finished with four shots. Handrick and Cording each had three shots on goal. Luther (Iowa) finished with eight shots, including five on goal. Lizzy De Prenger had three shots with one on goal while Springer recorded two shots on goal.
Lily Brock (4-1-1) earned the win for the Eagles, finishing with four saves. Kennedy Bergren (1-5-2) had eight saves for Luther (Iowa).
UWL returns to action Saturday, September 29 opening Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play at UW-Oshkosh at 4 p.m.
