La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 2-1 double overtime victory over 18th-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 4-2-1 on the season while the Thunder fall to 5-2. Wheaton (Ill.) entered the contest ranked 18th in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll as well as fourth in the Central Region. UWL is ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches North Region.
In the second-ever meeting between the teams and first since 1998, UWL took a 1-0 lead at 44:31 with
Margaret Harings notching her third goal of the season assisted by
Maya Schmitt. The Eagles led 1-0 at halftime as both teams recorded nine shots in the first 45 minutes of action.
Wheaton (Ill.) tied the contest at 1-1 at 49:31 as Aeva Graber scored her first goal of the year. She was assisted by Anna Saunders. The game remained tied at the end of regulation after the Thunder recorded nine shots to the Eagles' three in the second half. Wheaton (Ill.) had four shots in the first overtime and UWL one.
Alex Cording scored the game-winning goal at 107:13 assisted by
Kaitlyn Villars. It was Cording's first goal of the season.
UWL finished with 14 shots in the game, including five on goal.
Cassie Handrick led the Eagles with three shots while Cording, Harings and
Natalie Herzog each had two. Cording recorded both of her shots on goal while Harings and Herzog had one each.
Wheaton (Ill.) totaled 23 shots with eight on goal. Saunders had six shots with Graber and Carney Blake each finishing with four. Saunders recorded one shot on goal while Graber had three.
Lily Brock (3-1-1) earned the win for UWL, finishing with seven saves. Lauren Ketchum had three saves for Wheaton (Ill.).
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 26 hosting Luther College (Iowa) at 7 p.m.
