UWL Wins Opener With Walk-Off Grand Slam; Split Doubleheader With UW-Oshkosh

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at Copeland Park.  UWL won the opener 10-9 on a walk-off grand slam from Carson Youngquist before dropping the nightcap 4-3.  The Eagles move to 21-10 on the season, and 11-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).  The Titans, ranked 11th in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, move to 24-7 overall, and also 11-5 in the WIAC. 
 
The Eagles won the opener on Friday in dramatic fashion.  UW-Oshkosh led 7-6 going to the ninth inning, and added some insurance with a 2-run home run from Luke Reckert, taking a 9-6 advantage to the bottom of the ninth.  Nate Heili and Mitch Sutton walked to open the ninth for UWL, followed by a single from Brennan Schmitt to load the bases.  After a pitching change for UW-Oshkosh, UWL's Youngquist came on to pinch-hit, and hit the walk-off grand slam, giving the Eagles the 10-9 win.  It was Youngquist's first home run of the season.     14078
 
UWL had trailed 5-0 going to the bottom of the second before scoring two runs on five hits in the frame.  Brady Stolzman singled to left with two out, followed by a Shane Coker single, and a Jack Dwyer single to load the bases.  Nate Roethle then singled up the middle, driving in Coker and Stolzman to make it 5-2.
 
UWL added a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3.  Dwyer singled with one out and stole second.  Carney reached on an infield single, and Dwyer scored on the play after a UW-Oshkosh throwing error. 
 
Both teams scored a run in the fifth.  Reckert socred on a Polcyn single for UW-Oshkosh to make it 6-3, but a Sutton homer for UWL pulled the Eagles to within two runs at 6-4 in the bottom of the frame. 
 
The Titans went ahead 7-4 in the top of the seventh, but UWL pulled to within one run in the bottom of the inning.  Heili led off with a single, followed by a Sutton homerun, his second of the game, making it 7-6. 
 
Six Eagles had at least two hits in the game, with Sutton going 3-for-4 with three RBI, 3 runs scored, a double, and two home runs.  Coker was 3-for-4 with a run scored. 
 
Zach Pronschinske (3-1) earned the win for UWL, after coming in late in the ninth.  He allowed an earned run on one hit, and recorded one out via strikeout.  Starter Mason McMahon gave up six runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings, striking out five and walking two batters. 
 
Nick McLees (6-2) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, giving up the grand slam to Youngquist to end the game.  Colin Treml gave up five runs on 14 hits over 6.0 innings for the Titans. Reckert was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for UW-Oshkosh.  Ott was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. 
 
In the nightcap, UWL took an early lead in the bottom of the first.  Zach Carney singled to open the inning, advanced to second on a throwing error, and to third on a wild pitch.  He scored on a two-out grounder from Mitch Sutton, who reached on another UW-Oshkosh throwing error to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.
 
The Titans tied the game a 1-1 on an Andy Brahier home run in the top of the second. 
 
In the home half of the third, UWL took the lead again.  Cal Tully singled to center, and with one out, Sutton doubled to right center, driving him in to make it 2-1.  Sutton scored on a Shane Coker single through the left side, making it 3-1 Eagles. 
 
UW-Oshkosh tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the eighth with a Sean Cummins two-run home run to right, and took the lead in the ninth on a Zach Radde single through the right side, scoring Jonathan Selchow, who had singled to open the frame to make it 4-3.
 
UWL's Brady Stolzman walked with two outs in the bottom of the frame to put the tying run on, but Carney flied out to right to end the game.
 
Zach Pronschinske (3-2) took the loss for UWL, giving up three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.  He struck out two and walked one batter.  Starter James Witt went 6.1 innings, giving up a run on seven hits.  He struck out five and walked one. Coker went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI for the Eagles.  Tully and Carney each had two hits and a run scored, while Sutton had a double, RBI, and a run scored for UWL. 
 
Jesse Sustachek (4-1) earned the win for UW-Oshkosh.  He pitched a complete game (9.0 innings), giving up three runs (two earned) on ten hits.  He struck out seven and walked two batters. Logan Reckert went 3-for-4 with a double for UW-Oshkosh, while Brahier and Cummins both homered.   
 
UWL returns to action Saturday, May 5 hosting UW-Oshkosh at noon for a doubleheader at Copeland Park.
