Softball Team Earns Pair of Wins

Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a pair of wins Wednesday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Eagles opened the day with an 11-2 victory in five innings over Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) followed by a 6-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.). UWL improves to 3-7 on the season.

In the win over RIT (N.Y.), Caitlyn Hughes (1-4) earned the victory. She pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with five strikeouts.

RIT (N.Y.) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before UWL cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the second on Haley Radewan's home run. The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on Mia Schmidtke's RBI single and Grace Mindrup's run-scoring fielder's choice. UWL tallied eight times in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by Radewan's two-run double and Brittany Baldwin's three-run home run. 

Baldwin finished 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI while Radewan went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Schmidtke finished 2-for-3.

Maddie Muelken (1-0) earned the victory in UWL's 6-1 win over Stevens (N.J.) Wednesday. She went 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run with one strikeout.

Stevens (N.J.) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but UWL scored twice in the top of the second to lead 2-1. Mindrup lead-off the inning with a home run to tie the game and Morgann Harbort later scored an unearned run on Sabrina Scardamaglia's double.  The Eagles added solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings to lead 4-1.  Kerrigan Koch delivered an RBI double in the fourth while Radewan hit a solo home run in the sixth.  UWL finished the scoring in the seventh on Schmidtke's two-run single.

Schmidtke, Mindrup and Scardamaglia each had two hits.

UWL returns to action Friday, March 16 versus the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 11 a.m. (Central) and Hood College (Md.) at 1 p.m.
