UWL Extends Season-Opening Winning Streak to Six

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 65-44 win over Augsburg University (Minn.) Sunday night in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles are 6-0 for the first time since 2010-11. UWL went on to finish 20-8 overall and 12-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 2010-11 in earning a berth to the NCAA Division III Championships. Augsburg (Minn.) drops to 4-1 on the season with Sunday's loss. 

UWL won its first 13 games in the 2005-06 season.

UWL and Augsburg (Minn.) were tied four times in the first half Sunday night while having eight lead changes. Augsburg (Minn.) led 13-12 after the first quarter before UWL came back to lead, 25-24, at halftime. The Eagles opened the second half scoring the first 11 points to lead 36-24 with 7:03 left in the third quarter. Emma Gamoke scored eight points in the run. The Auggies cut the lead to 39-28 on a pair of Kaezha Wubben free throws with 6:06 remaining, but the Eagles finished the quarter on a 14-5 run to lead 53-33, including a Dani Craig three-pointer with :03 left. UWL outscored Augsburg (Minn.), 28-9, in the third quarter. The Auggies could get no closer than 16 points in the fourth quarter.  

UWL shot 37.3% from the field, including 25.0% (six-of-24) from three-point range, and 75.0% (15-of-20) at the free throw line. Delaney Schoenenberger led three players in double figures with 16 points while Ava Kramer totaled 14 and Gamoke 12. Craig had eight points, six rebounds and three assists. Gamoke also had six rebounds. 

The Eagles are now 7-1 the last four seasons in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.

Augsburg (Minn.) shot 29.1% from the field, including 19.0% (four-of-21) from three-point range, and 72.7% (eight-of-11) at the line. Camryn Speese led the Auggies with 11 points and 11 rebounds. 

Gamoke and Schoenenberger were two of five players named to the all-tournament team. They were joined by Speese and Wubben from Augsburg (Minn.) and Maiah Domask from UW-Platteville.

UWL returns action Thursday, November 29 hosting Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
