La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned its 12th straight win over city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) with a 78-56 victory Tuesday night in R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season while the V-Hawks drop to 4-4.
UWL now leads the all-time series, 17-8, with Viterbo (Wis.). The Eagles are 4-0 on the season for the first time since winning their first six games in 2010-11.
Dani Craig
Viterbo (Wis.) took a 7-3 lead with 7:10 left in the first quarter when UWL used a 22-3 run to lead 25-10 with 2:00 remaining after a
Dani Craig three-point field goal. The Eagles made nine-of-11 field goal attempts in the run, including five-of-six from three-point range. UWL led, 25-13, after the first quarter.
The V-Hawks cut the deficit to 29-23 with 4:06 remaining in the second quarter, but could get no closer the rest of the game. UWL led, 36-29, at halftime.
UWL opened the second half with a 13-2 run to lead 49-31 with 6:03 left in the third quarter on a
Emma Gamoke three-pointer. The Eagles led, 57-38, after three quarters and led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter.
UWL shot 40.3% from the field, including 34.4% (11-of-32) from three-point range, and 70.8% (17-of-24) at the free throw line. The Eagles attempted all 24 of their free throws in the second half Tuesday night.
Delaney Schoenenberger
Gamoke led three players in double figures with 24 points Tuesday while Craig finished with 20 and
Delaney Schoenenberger with 12. The trio combine to scored 56 of UWL's 78 points. Gamoke went 10-of-15 from the field, including four-of-eight from three-point range while Craig finished seven-of-11 from the field and five-of-nine from three-point range. She was one-of-two at the line. Schoenenberger went two-of-five from three-point range.
Lexie Higgins led the Eagles with 10 rebounds while Craig totaled nine, Schoenenberger eight and Gamoke seven. UWL outrebounded, Viterbo (Wis.), 52-41.
Viterbo (Wis.) shot 27.9% from the field, including 17.6% (six-of-34) from three-point range, and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the line. Alyssa Nilssen, Madison Doerr and Madessa Collins led the V-Hawks with nine points each. Collins and Justyne Burgess led Viterbo (Wis.) with seven rebounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 24 hosting Finlandia University (Mich.) at 5 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.
