La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team extended its winning streak to 12 with a 5-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 13-2-1 overall and 6-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds fall to 6-7-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
UWL, tied for 24th in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, have outscored its opponents, 44-8 in its 12-game winning streak. The 12-game winning streak ties the single-season school record set last year.
Megan Carroll scored her first goal of the season Saturday.
In a game played with a wind chill of 30 degrees and wind gusts up to 37 miles per hour, UWL took a 1-0 lead with
Kaitlyn Villars scoring unassisted at 5:52. Villars made it 2-0 at 12:44 with another unassisted goal. She now has seven goals on the season.
The Eagles led 2-0 at halftime.
Alex Cording scored at 57:32 with an assist from
Cassie Handrick to give UWL a 3-0 advantage. It was Cording's fourth goal of the season.
Megan Carroll made it 4-0 at 58:23 on a header off a Villars' corner kick for her first goal of the year. UWL got an own goal at 85:44 to finish the scoring.
UWL totaled 18 shots with 12 on goal. Villars had all three of her shots on goal while Cording also had three shots (two on goal) and
Natalie Herzog three (one on goal). UW-Eau Claire was held to five shots, including three on goal.
Lily Brock (11-1-1) earned the win, recording three saves. She now has 4.5 shutouts for the season. Sammie Lefaive (5-6-1) suffered the loss for UW-Eau Claire, finishing with four saves while playing the first half. Anna Sveiven played the second half, recording three saves.
UWL returns to action Sunday, October 21 hosting MSOE (Wis.) at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
