Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 59-57 victory at UW-Stout Wednesday night in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils fall to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
In the first half, UWL made 11-of-25 field goal attempts. The Eagles outscored UW-Stout 6-0 on second chance points and 9-1 in bench points in the opening half. UWL led by as many as six points on a
Ben Meinholz jumper that made it 30-24 with 1:56 remaining in the period. The Eagles led 30-26 at halftime.
A 6-0 run to start the second half put UWL up 36-26 with 18:18 remaining after a
Nolan Wright layup. The Eagles led 40-30 with 15:48 left when the Blue Devils used a 12-2 run to tie the game with 10:33 to play on a Joe Duty jumper.
Milton Cummings made a three-pointer to put UWL back ahead 45-42 at the 9:58 mark as it started a 7-0 run to give the Eagles a 49-42 lead with 8:31 left.
UWL led by nine at 56-47 with 6:09 remaining when UW-Stout went on a 10-0 run to take the lead 57-56 with :44 left on Zach Dahl's layup. Cummings then hit the game-winning three-point field goal with :08 remaining. UW-Stout could not get a shot off and UWL secured the win.
UWL shot 46.9% from the field, including 19.0% (four-of-21) from three-point range, and 64.3% (nine-of-14) at the free throw line. Cummings recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and career-high 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Meinholz finished with 15 points and three steals.
Brendon Manning pitched in nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block.
UW-Stout shot 46.7% from the field, including 38.5% (five-of-13) from three-point range, and 76.9% (10-of-13) at the line. Sam Ortmann led the Blue Devils with 16 points, while Isaac Elliott added 12 points.
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 27 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 5 p.m.
