La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 76-62 to UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers improve to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference. UW-Stevens Point is receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll.
UWL led 3-2 when UW-Stevens Point used a 7-0 run to lead 9-3 with 16:18 remaining in the first half on Canon O'Heron's layup. The Pointers led 20-13 when a pair of
Nolan Wright layups for the Eagles cut the deficit to 20-17 with 8:19 left. UW-Stevens Point led by as many as eight in the first half before taking a 42-35 halftime advantage.
Ben Meinholz finished with 16 points and four assists Saturday.
The Pointers led 48-39, but five points from
Brendon Manning and a dunk from
Ben Meinholz brought UWL within 48-46 with 16:08 remaining. UWL trailed 55-53 with 11:31 left when UW-Stevens Point went on a 12-2 run to lead 67-55 with 4:39 remaining. The Eagles cut the lead to 70-62 with 1:27 left on Manning's layup, but could get no closer the rest of the game.
UWL shot 43.4% from the field, including 26.7% (four-of-15) from three-point range, and 85.7% (12-of-14) at the free throw line. Manning led the Eagles with 17 points and eight rebounds, finishing seven-of-nine from the field, including one-of-one from three-point range. He was two-of-two at the line. Meinholz finished with 16 points and four assists while Wright had eight points.
UW-Stevens Point shot 53.2% from the field, including 65.0% (13-of-20) in the first half. The Pointers shot 50.0% (10-of-20) from three-point range for the game and converted all 16 of their free throw attempts. O'Heron led UW-Stevens Point with 26 points while MJ Delmore and Nate Dodge each finished with 18.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 31 at 20th-ranked UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
