UWL Opens WIAC Play with Shutout Win over UW-Stevens Point

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 3-0 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  The Eagles improve to 7-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC while the Pointers fall to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Kaitlyn Villars scored her sixth goal of the season Saturday afternoon.

With the win, UWL records consecutive victories over UW-Stevens Point for the first time in school history. The Eagles earned a 5-0 win over the Pointers last season in Stevens Point. UW-Stevens Point now leads the all-time series, 25-5-4.  

UWL, now 4-0-1 at home this season, recorded its seventh shutout of the year with Saturday's win. 

Kaitlyn Villars gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 6:42 with an assist from Hayley Stephens. It marked her sixth goal of the season. Maddie Granos scored her sixth goal of the year at 37:04 to give UWL a 2-0 advantage with Alex Graeber recording the assist. The Eagles led 2-0 at halftime, outshooting the Pointers, 10-8.  

Margaret Harings gave UWL a 3-0 lead at 50:21 to finish the scoring.  Mary Mansker recorded the assist.

UWL had 21 shots in the game, including 10 on goal, as 12 different players recorded a shot. UW-Stevens Point had eight shots in the game with two on goal. All eight shots came in the first half. 

Lily Brock (81:17) and Abbi Burke (8:43) combined for the shutout victory for UWL with Brock finishing with four saves. Sarah Peplinski had seven saves for UW-Stevens Point.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, October 4 at UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
