Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 5-1 win over UW-Platteville Wednesday night at Pioneer Stadium. The Eagles improve to 8-1-2 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play while the Pioneers fall to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Kaitlyn Villars gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 6:17, scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Margaret Harings scored on a penalty kick at 31:47, and UWL was ahead 2-0 at halftime.
Alex Graeber scored early in the second half to it 3-0 at 47:29.
Cassie Handrick scored at 64:56 on a assist from
MaKenna McGilvray to increase the lead to 4-0, and
Rachel Rogahn completed the scoring for the Eagles with an assist from
Hayley Hargroder at 71:42 to give UWL the 5-0 lead.
UW-Platteville's Anna Sobal scored on a penalty kick at 77:15 to put the Pioneers on the board at 5-1.
"Road wins in the WIAC are always challenging, but I was happy with our focus at kickoff and throughout the match," said UWL Head Coach
Jason Murphy. "Five goals from five different players is a solid performance."
UWL had 14 shots in the game, including 10 on goal, as 10 different players recorded a shot. UW-Platteville had four shots in the game with three on goal.
Lily Brock (56:52) earned the victory for UWL, moving to 4-1 on the season.
Meghan Cannestra (25:09) and
Abbi Burke (7:59) also spent time in goal on Wednesday. Brock and Burke finished with a save each. Alyssa Sickler had five saves for UW-Platteville.
The Eagles are receiving votes on this week's United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll as well as the D3soccer.com Top-25 Poll. It marks UWL's second appearance in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this season and its first on the D3soccer.com Poll.
"We had moments of great soccer tonight," added Murphy. "We are excited to build on that as we prepare for the weekend."
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 7 hosting UW-River Falls at 3:30 p.m.
