Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, currently ranked fourth in the United Soccer Coaches North Region, earned a 3-0 win over fifth-ranked Coe College (Iowa) Wednesday night at Clark Field. The Eagles improve to 6-1-2 on the season and give the Kohawks their first lost on the year (8-1-2).
"Tonight was a great team win against a regionally ranked and previously unbeaten opponent," said Head Coach
Jason Murphy. "Coe tactically had a plan and our players were able to break them down and create some quality chances. Our players were very patient in possession and moved the ball well."
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at the 33:19 mark of the first half on
Kaitlyn Villars' fifth goal of the year.
Natalie Herzog assisted, her third of the year.
UWL scored twice early in the second half to put the game away.
Maddie Granos scored her fourth goal of the year at 52:42 to make it 2-0, and added her fifth of the season at 58:06 to put the Eagles ahead 3-0. Granos' first goal was assisted by
Katie Feller and
Alex Cording, and the second by
Cassie Handrick.
"Maddie has been playing very well lately, and continued that tonight with her two goals," added Murphy. "
Margaret Harings was great in the midfield and controlled the game. She was a ball winner and did a good job of distributing the ball."
Lily Brock (four saves) and
Meghan Cannestra (one) combined for the shutout win for UWL. MJ Winterer had three saves for Coe (Iowa).
