La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 3-2 double overtime victory over Augustana College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 4-0-2 on the season while the Vikings drop to 2-3.
UWL took a 1-0 halftime lead after
Kaitlyn Villars scored at 18:35 assisted by
Hayley Stephens. The Eagles had 13 shots in the first half while the Vikings recorded four.
The second half featured a combined 29 shots between the two teams with UWL recording 18. Augustana (Ill.) tied the game at 1-1 at 65:25 as Anna Fank scored assisted off a Abby Wendell free kick. The Vikings took a 2-1 lead at 81:58 with Cameron Kekelik scoring assisted by Jenna Dvorak. Kekelik scored off Dvorak's rebound.
UWL tied the game at 84:05 as
Margaret Harings scored off Villars' corner kick to make it 2-2.
The Eagles had three shots in the first overtime and the Vikings one. UWL scored the game-winning goal at 103:17 with
Maya Schmitt recording the goal. Villars and
Katie Feller had assists. The goal came after a corner kick and header.
UWL finished with 36 shots, including 14 on goal. Fifteen different players had a shot for the Eagles with Harings leading with seven. Augustana (Ill.) had 16 shots with 11 on goal. UWL finished with 11 corner kicks to Augustana's (Ill.) three.
Kennedy Brault recorded nine saves for UWL while Sydney Ion finished with 11 for Augustana (Ill.).
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 20 hosting Wartburg College (Iowa) at 7 p.m.
