Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 8-3 at third-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday night in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) Game. UWL drops to 28-17 on the season and will await word if its earned one of 13 at-large bids to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships. The field will be announced late Sunday, May 14 or early Monday, May 15.
UW-Whitewater, ranked third on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improves to 35-7 on the season and clinches the WIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships with the league title.
UWL forced a second championship game after rallying for five runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 9-8 victory earlier Saturday.
UW-Whitewater scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning in Saturday's meeting with UWL. The inning was highlighted by Matt Wary's two-run single. UWL cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth after
Brennan Schmitt scored on a UW-Whitewater throwing error and
Sam Prissel came in on
Nate Heili's RBI groundout.
The Eagles made it 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth after
Alex Brown doubled and later scored on
Nate Roethle's single. The Warhawks tallied three times on five in the top of the seventh with Wary collecting his second two-run single of the game.
Travis Stahulak (2-3) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out three. The Eagles finished with eight hits as Roethle went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Ankur Shah (5-0) earned the victory for UW-Whitewater, going 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and two walks with three strikeouts. The Warhawks totaled 13 hits as five players recorded at least two. Brett Krause went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Wary had four RBI.
