Postgame player interview with Mueller and Carignan
La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a 2-1 win over St. Norbert College (Wis.) Friday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA III La Crosse, Wisconsin Regional at North Campus Field.
UWL improves to 29-14 on the season and will take on UW-Oshkosh Saturday, May 13 at 11 a.m. in the winner's bracket while St. Norbert (Wis.) will face Benedictine University (Ill.) at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
St. Norbert (Wis.) scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Brianna Braeger singled to lead off the game, followed by a one-out double from Leigh Grall. An error on the UWL right fielder allowed Braeger to come all the way around from first to score.
UWL tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as
Megan Andes scored on a sacrifice fly from
Ally Perdue to make it 1-1.
Katie Klein
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Ashley Lindstrom hit a one-out double to left and later scored on a
Sarah Mueller single to left to put UWL ahead 2-1.
Katie Klein came on to pitch with runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh. She induced a fly-ball out, and ended the game with a strikeout to pick up her ninth save of the season.
Jessie Carignan (12-5) picked up the victory for UWL, allowing a run on four hits over 6.1 innings. Mueller went 3-for-3 for UWL with an RBI.
Sydney Pfotenhauer (11-10) took the loss for St. Norbert (Wis.), giving up two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings. Braeger was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
