Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a doubleheader at UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 in 12 innings in the opener and 6-2 in the nightcap. The Eagles, ranked 15th on D3baseball.com, fall to 10-9 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks, ranked fourth on D3baseball.com, improve to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning in the opener as
Nate Heili opened the frame with a single and scored on
Brady Stolzman's double to make it 1-0. Stolzman advanced to third on a groundout and scored on
Alex Robson's sacrifice fly.
UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on Steve Chamberlain's sol home run, but UWL responded in the top of fifth to regain its two-run lead. Pinch-runner
Connor Cook singled to start the inning and moved to third on
Joel Zyhowski's double. Cook later scored on Heili's one-out RBI groundout.
The Warhawks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Chamberlain hit his second home run of the game to lead-off the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Jordan Kuczynski singled and advanced to second on a groundout. Cal Aldridge doubled to move Kuczynski to third base and Mike Aiello's groundout knocked in Kuczynski to the game.
Each team left runners on base in the 10th and 11th innings. The Eagles had the potential go-ahead run thrown out at the plate in the top of the 10th. The Warhawks' Blake Fleischman hit a walk-off home run to start the bottom of the 12th for the 4-3 win.
Caleb Willems (0-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 5.1 innings in relief. He allowed five hits and one run with six strikeouts.
Mason McMahon started for the Eagles, going 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and two walks while recording six strikeouts. UWL totaled 11 hits in the opener with Zyhowski, Heili, Stolzman and Robson each finishing with two.
Mike Nompleggi (2-0) picked up the win for UW-Whitewater, going 4.0 innings in relief. He allowed three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Westin Wuethrich started for the Warhawks, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and two walks while striking out 10. UW-Whitewater had 13 hits. Fleischman and Chamberlain each went 3-for-5.
In the second game, UW-Whitewater tallied three times in the bottom of the fourth to start the scoring. Matt Wary's single scored Aiello to make it 1-0. Chamberlain's RBI single scored Wary for a 2-0 lead and Kuczynski RBI single knocked in Fleischman to finish the scoring. All three runs were unearned. The Warhawks made it 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth on Fleischman's solo home run.
UWL cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the eighth. Zyhowski was hit-by-pitch with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. He then scored after Heili reached on a UW-Whitewater fielding error. Robson's RBI single scored Heili to make it 4-2. The Warhawks got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles from Fleischman and Brett Krause.
Zach Pronschinske (0-1) took the loss for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings in relief, allowing six hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out seven.
Travis Stahulak started for the Eagles, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and four walks with three strikeouts. UWL had seven hits with Heili, Robson and Cook each finishing with two.
Ankur Shah (3-0) pitched a complete-game for UW-Whitewater, earning the win after going 9.0 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs (both unearned) and one walk with six strikeouts. The Warhawks had nine hits as Krause finished with three and Fleischman and Chamberlain with two each.
UWL returns to action Thursday, April 13 at UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
