Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh Thursday afternoon at Tiedemann Field. The Eagles earned a 5-0 win in the opener while the Titans came back to pick up a 7-0 victory in the nightcap. UWL is now 11-10 overall and 1-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Oshkosh is 12-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
With the win in Thursday's first game, UWL head coach
Chris Schwarz earned his 300th career victory at the helm of the Eagles. The winningest coach in school history, Schwarz is 300-227-1 (.569) in 13 years as UWL's head coach. He is the seventh coach in WIAC history to reach 300 wins.
Caleb Boushley (4-2) earned the win in Thursday's opener, pitching his fourth complete-game of the season and eighth in his career. He went 9.0 innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 12. Boushley earns his second career shutout. With the win, Boushley ties the school record of 19 career victories held by
Ben Cejka (2012-15). Boushley is now 19-4 in his three-year career.
UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener, scoring an unearned run.
Nate Heili reached on a fielding error with one out and advanced to third on
Alex Robson's two-out single. After
Brennan Schmitt walked to load the bases,
Nate Roethle's infield single scored Heili with the first run of the game.
Chris Schwarz earned his 300th career win Thursday.
The Eagles made it 2-0 in the top of the third. Brady Stolzman was hit-by-pitch with one out and went to third on Robson's single. After a pop-out, Roethle's two-out single knocked in Stolzman for a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth,
Joel Zyhowski singled with one out and went to third on Heili's double. Stolzman followed with an RBI single to score both runners to make it 4-0.
Robson's single in the top of the ninth scored Zyhowski for a 5-0 lead.
UWL finished with 13 hits as five players recorded multiple-hit games. Heili and Robson each went 3-for-5 while Zyhowski went 2-for-5, Roethle 2-for-3 and
Connor Cook 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, UW-Oshkosh scored four runs in the first two innings. Andy Brahier had an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Dylan Ott, Tyler Kozlowski and Brahier each had run-scoring singles in the second. Johnny Eagan added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 5-0 advantage. Ott had an RBI double and Eagan an RBI single in the eighth.
Jameson Lavery (3-2) took the loss for UWL, going 2.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Six different players had a single for the Eagles as the team did not advance a runner past second base.
Colan Treml (3-1) earned the complete-game victory for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 9.0 innings, allowing six hits while striking out five. The Titans had 14 hits in the game with Tyler Kozlowski and Johnny Eagan each finishing with three.
UWL and UW-Oshkosh return to action Friday, April 14 with a doubleheader starting at noon.
