Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at Tiedmann Field. The Titans won the opener, 6-0, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 3-0. UWL is now 12-11 overall and 2-6 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh is 13-12 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The teams split the four-game series as all four games featured shutouts. UWL won the opener Thursday, 5-0, while UW-Oshkosh captured the nightcap, 7-0.
It marked the first time UWL had been shutout in consecutive games for the first time in 495 games.
In Friday's opener, Jesse Sustachek (4-2) pitched a complete-game shutout for UW-Oshkosh. He went 9.0 innings, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out two.  The Titans scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Taylor Grimm's single scored Tyler Kozlowski with the first run of the game. Johnny Eagan then scored as Zack Radde reached on a fielding error to make it 2-0 while Andy Brahier scored on Jack Paulson's RBI bunt groundout.Â
UW-Oshkosh added three runs in the bottom of the third. Grimm's sacrifice fly scored Kozlowski for a 4-0 lead and Eagan scored on the play after a UWL throwing error. Paulson's RBI single knocked in Brahier for a 6-0 lead.Â
Mason McMahon (1-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing six hits, six runs (four earned) and two walks while striking out two.
Brock Rude went 4.2 innings in relief, allowing two hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
Justin Scoville went 0.1 of an inning with one walk. The Eagles were held to three hits with
Brady Stolzman,
Brennan Schmitt and
Alex Brown each finishing 1-for-3.
UW-Oshkosh totaled eight hits with Paulson finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI. Eagan went 2-for-4 with two runs.
In the nightcap,
Travis Stahulak and
Caleb Willems combined on the shutout for UWL. Stahulak (4-2) earned the win, going 7.0 innings, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out five. Willems earned his fourth save of the season, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing two hits.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
Sam Prissel singled to start the inning and advance to second on
Alex Brown's sacrifice bunt.
Joel Zyhowski followed with an RBI single to score Prissel for a 1-0 lead. Zyhowski advanced to second on the throw and wne to third on
JJ Belknapp's fly out to center field.
Nate Heili then delivered a two-out RBI single to bring in Zyhowski. UWL added a run in the top of the eighth as Schmitt scored on a passed ball.
UWL finished with nine hits in the second game as Heili and Prissel went each 2-for-4.
Jacob Pohlman (1-2) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and two walks. The Titans were held to four hits with Jensen Hinton going 2-for-3. UW-Oshkosh only advanced one runner to third base for the game, coming in the bottom of the first.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 19 hosting the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 1 p.m.
