Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball fell 69-54 at UW-Whitewater Friday night in Kachel Gymnasium in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships Semifinal (presented by Culver's). The Eagles finish 16-11 on the season while the Warhawks improve to 21-5 and advance to the tournament championship game Sunday, February 26 at UW-Oshkosh.
UW-Whitewater, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, never trailed in Friday's win. The Warhawks raced out to a 10-2 lead with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles cut the lead to 10-5 after
Delaney Schoenenberger hit three free throws with :48 left before a Brooke Trewyn with :05 remaining gave UW-Whitewater a 12-5 lead at the end of the quarter.
UWL cut the margin to 14-9 with 8:08 left in the second quarter on a
MaKenzie Miller jumper, but UW-Whitewater used a 17-4 run to lead 31-13 with 1:07 remaining. The Warhawks led 34-16 at halftime.
UW-Whitewater led 46-26 at the end of the third quarter before UWL opened the fourth on a 13-7 run to cut the deficit to 53-39 with 6:27 left on
Elise DeNoyer's three-point play. UWL could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the game.
UWL shot 28.6% from the field, including 35.7% (five-of-14) from three-point range, and 85.0% (17-of-20) at the free throw line. DeNoyer recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds while adding three assists and two steals. Miller finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while
Sydney Kannel totaled eight points.
UWL was playing in the WIAC Championships semifinals for the third time in school history, including its first appearance since 2011. The Eagles also played in the tournament semifinals in 2006.
UW-Whitewater shot 44.3% from the field, including 27.8% (five-of-18) from three-point range, and 71.1% (10-of-14) at the line. The Warhawks shot 59.1% (13-of-22) from the field in the second half. Trewyn led four players in double figures with 18 points and eight rebounds. Becky Deichl finished with 17 points and six rebounds while Reilly Stewart and Malia Smith each totaled 11 points.
