La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team tied a single-season school record with its 10th shutout of the year with a 4-0 victory over UW-Stout Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 11-1-2 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils drop to 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the conference.
UWL, ranked 21st on the United Soccer Coaches National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Poll, extended its winning streak to six with Wednesday's victory. The Eagles improved to 7-0-1 at home this season, outscoring opponents, 21-2. UWL is ranked first in the United Soccer Coaches North Region.
The 10 shutouts ties the single-season record set in 1995, 2010 and 2016.
Kaitlyn Villars gave UWL a 1-0 lead at 8:15 in Wednesday's win over UW-Stout with assists from
Margaret Harings and
Hayley Stephens. It was Villars' team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Alex Cording quickly made it 2-0 at 10:15 with an unassisted goal. She is tied for second on the team with seven goals.
The Eagles led 2-0 at halftime.
Maddie Granos gave UWL a 3-0 lead at 73:08 with her seventh goal of the year.
Tori Barnhart and Harings recorded the assists as Granos scored on a header off a free kick.
Hayley Hargroder finished the scoring for UWL at 76:27 assisted by Granos. It was Hargroder's first career collegiate goal.
UWL finished with 28 shots in the game, including 14 on goal. Fifteen different players recorded a shot for the Eagles. UW-Stout totaled 13 shots with four on goal. The Eagles outshot the Blue Devils, 20-7, in the second half.
Lily Brock (76:27) and
Kennedy Brault (13:33) combined on the shutout for UWL as Brock finished with three saves and Brault one. Lynn Johnson finished with 10 saves for UW-Stout.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 14 at UW-Eau Claire at 1 p.m.
