UW-La Crosse Drops Road Game at UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 75-71 at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at Berg Gymnasium.  The Eagles drop to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers improve to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

UW-Stevens Point raced out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and led 12-3 with 7:04 left in the first quarter after a Taylor Douglas layup.  The Pointers later led 18-10 with 2:32 left on a Lexi Roland three-pointer, but the Eagles responded to cut the lead to 22-17 at the end of the quarter as Taylor Nelson scored on a layup with :07 remaining.  UWL cut the deficit to 22-20 on Delaney Schoenenberger's three-point field goal to start the second quarter.  The Eagles took their first lead of the game with 1:00 left in the half on a pair of Alyssa Clemment free throws, but a Douglas three-pointer gave the Pointers the lead at 37-35 with :42 remaining.  UW-Stevens Point led 39-35 at halftime on a pair of Autumn Hennes free throws with :03 left. 

The Pointers opened the second half on a 8-2 run to lead 47-37 with 8:18 remaining and later led 54-46 with 1:49 left in the quarter.  UWL trailed 57-51 at the end of three quarters after Delaney Schoenenberger connected on a three-pointer with :02 left.  MaKenzie Miller's three-point play with 8:22 left cut the lead to 59-56 and her jumper with 7:07 remaining cut the margin to 59-58.  Hennes responded with a layup to give UW-Stevens Point a 61-58 advantage.  A three-point play from Douglas gave the Pointers a 64-59 lead with 6:11 left, but back-to-back three-pointers from Nelson and Elise DeNoyer gave UWL a 66-65 lead with 5:16 left.  

UWL later led 71-69 with 2:27 remaining on a pair of Miller free throws.  Lauren Anklam made one-of-two at the line for UW-Stevens Point with 2:03 left to cut the lead to 71-70 and after a UWL missed jumper, Anklam's layup with 1:09 remaining gave the Pointers a 72-71 advantage.  UWL turned the ball over on its next possession and Anklam's pair of free throws with :25 made it 74-71.  The Eagles missed a potential game-tying three-point field goal with :19 left and Mickey Roland finished the scoring going one-of-two at the line with :15 remaining.

UWL shot 43.6% from the field, including 33.3% (six-of-18) from three-point range, and 85.0% (17-of-20) at the free throw line.  Miller led the Eagles with 17 points while DeNoyer finished with 14 points and five rebounds.  Schoenenberger scored 12 points and finished with a team-high six rebounds off the bench.

UW-Stevens Point shot 52.2% from the field, including 58.3% (14-of-24) in the first half. The Pointers shot 56.3% (nine-of-16) from three-point range for the game and 81.8% (18-of-22) at the line.  Hennes led five players in double figures with 18 points while Lauren Anklam finished with 15 and Douglas 14.  Taylor Barrett and Lexi Roland each scored 11 points.  Barrett had a game-high seven rebounds.
