UW-La Crosse Earns WIAC Win over UW-Stout

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 64-52 victory over UW-Stout Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles improve to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils drop to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.  UW-Stout had won nine of the previous 13 meetings with UWL entering Saturday. 

With the win, UWL surpasses last year's overall (7) and league (1) wins from 2015-16.

UW-Stout took an early 10-7 lead with 6:00 left in the first quarter on a Jenna Goldsmith jumper, but UWL responded with a 10-0 run to lead 17-10.  Delaney Schoenenberger and Alyssa Clemment each hit a three-pointer in the run.  The Eagles led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.  UW-Stout cut the lead to 19-16 with 9:40 remaining in the second quarter, but UWL used another 10-0 run to lead 29-16 with 4:44 left on Taylor Nelson's three-pointer.  UWL led 33-23 at halftime. 

UWL led 39-28 with 7:23 remaining in the third quarter when it went on a 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 50-30. The Blue Devils scored the final six points of the third quarter and the first two points in the fourth to cut the deficit to 50-38, but Schoenenberger's three-pointer gave UWL a 53-38 advantage with 8:32 left.  UW-Stout could get no close than 10 points the rest of the game.

Delaney Schoenenberger finished with 15 points Saturday afternoon.


UWL shot 38.7% from the field, including 36.0% (nine-of-25) from three-point range, and 58.3% (seven-of-12) at the free throw line.  The nine three-point field goals made ties a season-high.  UWL finished with 18 assists on 24 made field goals. "We want to share the ball," said UWL head coach Karen Middleton.  "We take pride in getting really good ball movement."

The Eagles outscored the Blue Devils, 40-6, in bench points.  Nelson and Schoenenberger each finished with 15 points. Nelson went five-of-10 from the field, including two-of-five from three-point range, and three-of-four at the line while Schoenenberger finished six-of-10 from the field, including three-of-five from three-point range. 

MaKenzie Miller recorded her second straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Five different players recorded a three-point field goal made for the Eagles. 

"Delaney gets pretty hot of the bench and we know what she can do," said Middleton.  "Taylor is just off a knee injury and getting a real feel for stuff.  She is going to be able to do a lot for us."

UW-Stout shot 31.9% from the field, including 13.3% (two-of-15) from three-point range, and 54.5% (six-of-11) at the line.  Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen led the Blue Devils with 13 points while Goldsmith finished with 12 points.  Diedrich had a team-high nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 18 at UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
