Three Divers Earn Bids to NCAA III Championships

Six members of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse diving team completed second day action Saturday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Central Regional Championships in the Trumbull Aquatics Center at Denison University.  Three UWL divers earned bids to the NCAA Division III Championships.

On the women's side UWL's Kayley Alioto and Jordan Anderson earned two of the seven unofficial regional qualifying berths for the national championships scheduled for March 16-19 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Eagles' Tanner Folvag earned one of the 10 unofficial regional qualifying berths on the men's side. The official list of swimmers and divers for the national championships will be posted on ncaa.com Monday, February 29.

Alioto placed fifth in Saturday's one-meter competition (413.75 points) while Anderson was 14th (385.70).  Anderson finished third (450.80) and Alioto fourth (437.35) in Friday's three-meter diving. Alioto and Anderson will both be competing in their first national championships.

After finishing 12th (404.20) in Friday's one-meter competition, Folvag placed eighth (457.30) in Saturday's three-meter. He will be making his first career appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships.

UWL's Christina Reif was sixth (410.60) in the one-meter competition after placing 17th (381.70) in Friday's three-meter.  She is listed as the first alternate for the Central Regional for the NCAA III Championships.

The Eagles' Jessie Metz placed 15th (381.65) and Bekka Reineke 21st (366.40) in Saturday's one-meter competition after Metz finished 20th (365.25) and Reineke ninth (406.20) in Friday's one-meter.

A total of 28 women and 24 men competed at this weekend's NCAA Division III Central Regional Diving Championships. 

Maria Zarka of Kenyon College (Ohio) took the women's one-meter (454.75) and three-meter (494.15) titles while Max Levy of Denison (Ohio) swept the one (537.10) and three (561.55) titles. 

Anderson and Reif appeared in their third career diving regional meet in 2016.  Anderson placed ninth in the one and three-meter in 2015 after finishing 10th in the three-meter competition and 13th in the one-meter in 2014.  Reif was eighth in last year's three-meter and tied for 22nd in the one-meter after finishing 15th in the one and three-meter competition in 2014.

Alioto and Metz made their second career appearance in the regional while Reineke completed her first.  Alioto finished eighth in the one-meter and 17th in the three-meter last year while Metz was 12th in the one-meter and 16th in the three-meter.
 
Folvag appeared in his third regional diving championship this season.  He placed 19th in the one-meter and 23rd in the three-meter last season after finishing 13th in the three-meter and 14th in the one-meter in 2014.  He was named the WIAC Male Diver of the Meet at the league championships February 18-20, sweeping the one-meter and three-meter titles.

Denison University (Ohio) was one of four regional qualifying meets, joining Wellesley College (Mass.), State University of New York at Cortland and Grinnell College (Iowa).

The NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships are scheduled for Wednesday-Saturday, March 16-19 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
