UWL 170, Luther College (Iowa) 124
Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's swimming and diving team earned a 170-124 dual victory over Luther College (Iowa) Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 1-1 in duals this season.
UWL set new Luther College (Iowa) pool records in four individual events and both relays Saturday. In additon, the Eagles won three other individual swimming titles on the day, and also swept the diving competition.
Jacob Burchfield set two records Saturday, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.59) and 100-yard freestyle (47.50). In the breastroke, he bested his own record of 1:01.06, set last season (Nov. 21, 2015), and broke the previous record of teammate
Ryan Jessen in the 100 freestyle of 47.76, also set a year ago.
UWL's
Quinton Maydaniuk time of 2:17.20 in his victory in the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday also set a new pool record, previously set by Dylan Gray of Girnnell College (Iowa) (2:17.49 - Nov. 9, 2013). Maydaniuk also had a second-place finish Saturday in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.16).
The Eagles swept the relay titles Saturday, with Jessen, Maydaniuk,
Jackson Uselman, and Bruchfield first in the 400-yard medley (3:38.52) and Burchfield, Uselman,
Nicholas Brehmer, and Jessen winning the 400-yard freestyle (3:14.44). Both times set new pool records, breaking old marks also held by UWL. The previous records of 3:39.51 in the 400-yard medley and 3:15.75 in the 400-yard freestyle were both set Nov. 22, 2014.
Uselman won a pair of individual titles Saturday, capturing the crown in the 200-yard freestyle with a pool record (1:47.81) and 100-yard butterfly (54.54) while Jessen took the 50-yard freestyle title (22.34) and also had a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (57.24).
In the diving competition, UWL's
Kyle Wolmutt won the three-meter crown with 283.45 points and the one-meter title with 258.25 points. In both events,
Elijah Heggerness was second (247.10 points in three-meter/210.50 one-meter) and
Jack Zocher finished third (239.90 three-meter/209.40 one-meter).
Other top finishers for UWL Saturday included
Trevor Andersen, who earned second-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.71) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:49.11).
Erik Wickstrom placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.33) and 200-yard butterfly (2:04.56), and fourth in the 400-yard IM (4:38.09).
Brehmer earned second-place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.23) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.50), while
Kipp Dietrich was third in the 100-yard butterfly (56.42) and 200-yard butterfly (2:09.18).
The Eagles'
Andrew Torresani took third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.72) with
Brandon Sandquist third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.77).
