UWL Earns Win at Tenth-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

UWL earned its fifth win over a ranked opponent with Saturday's victory.
Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-1 (18-25, 25-14, 28-26, 25-23) victory at 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in Berg Gymnasium.  The Eagles, ranked 18th on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, improve to 17-3 overall and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).  The Pointers, ranked 10th on this week's AVCA Poll, drops to 19-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

With the win, UWL moves into a share of first-place in the WIAC with UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater. It is the Eagles' fifth win over a ranked opponent this year.

UWL's 17-3 start is its best start since going 21-3 in 2003.  The Eagles went on to finish 33-6 overall and advanced to the NCAA III Quarterfinals in 2003.

The opening set was tied, 11-11, when UW-Stevens Point went on a 6-2 run to lead 17-13.  A Jessica Jablonski kill cut the margin to 17-14, but the Eagles could get no closer as the Pointers scored the next four points to take a 21-14 advantage.

UWL raced out to a 11-3 lead in the second set and UW-Stevens Point could get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

The third set was tied 8-8 when the Eagles scored three straight points, including a pair off Pointers' hitting errors.  UW-Stevens Point trailed 20-14 when it went on a 8-2 run to force a 22-22 tie. The Pointers had a pair of set points, including 26-25 after a Ellen Drewry kill, but the Eagles won the final three points for the 28-26 victory. A pair of Stephanie Henk kills gave UWL a 27-26 lead and Drewry's hitting error gave the Eagles a 2-1 set lead.

UW-Stevens Point led 12-8 in the fourth set before UWL used an 8-2 run to take a 16-14 advantage on a Henk kill.  The Pointers responded scoring the next five points for a 19-16 lead and later led 22-18, but the Eagles scored four straight points to tie the set.  Marisa Johnson had a pair of kills for UWL. The Eagles trailed 23-22 before scoring the final three points to earn the match victory.  Jill Entinger had back-to-back kills to give UWL a 24-23 lead and Paige Schmidt's ace clinched the win.

Henk led UWL with 14 kills while Jill Entinger finished with 12. Jablonski and Johnson each had eight kills.  Madison Entinger recorded 46 assists as the Eagles hit .163.  Henk led five players in double figures in digs with 19 while Halle Barnabo finished with 16 and Schmidt 12.  Johnson and Madison Entinger each had 11 digs. 

UWL had 7.0 team blocks with Jill Entinger and Johnson each having four block assists.

Kelly Cefalu led UW-Stevens Point with 17 kills while Bella Nelson recorded 11.  Abby Majercik had 38 assists as the Pointers hit .155 for the match. Bri Piepenbrok had 15 digs with Kendra Kundinger and Majercik finishing with 11 each. Marie Krengel finished with 10 digs.

UW-Stevens Point finished with 11.0 team blocks with Drewry recording six block assists.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, October 19 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
