Women's Basketball Falls at UW-Superior

Box Score Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 67-65 at UW-Superior Saturday afternoon in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.  The Eagles drop to 9-13 overall and 4-9 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Yellowjackets improve to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the conference. 

UW-L scored the first 11 points of the game with Rachel Atchison tallying seven. UW-Superior's Grace Kennedy made it 11-2 with 15:27 remaining in the first half, but UW-L responded with a 9-0 run to lead 20-2 with 12:36 left on a Maggi Bishop layup.  UW-Superior missed 13 of its first 14 shots from the field. 

The Eagles led 22-4 with 11:23 left on a Jenna Anderson layup, but the Yellowjackets went on a 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 22-12. Elise DeNoyer's three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Atchison gave UW-L a 27-12 advantage.  The Eagles led 32-14, but the Yellowjackets used a 9-0 run to end the half to trail 32-23.

UW-Superior took its first lead of the game with 14:53 remaining at 39-38 on two Carmen Watson free throws.  Cameron Chapin hit one-of-two free throws for UW-L to tie the game at 39-39 before UW-Superior went on a 12-4 run to lead 51-43. The Eagles responded scoring the next eight points to force a 51-51 tie with 9:59 left on a DeNoyer layup.

The contest was tied five more times, including 65-65 with 1:27 left after UW-Superior's Allyssa Lindberg's three-point field goal.  The Eagles turned the ball over on their next two possessions while the Yellowjackets missed a layup.  Sally Linzmeier gave UW-Superior a 67-65 advantage with a pair of free throws with :10 left.  Atchison missed a three-point field goal with :04 remaining.

UW-L shot 38.8% from the field, including 25.0% (two-of-eight) from three-point range, and 86.2% (25-of-29) at the free throw line.  Anderson and DeNoyer led the Eagles with 17 points each while Atchison finished with 11 points.  Anderson added four assists, three steals and three rebounds while DeNoyer recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.  She also had three assists.

UW-Superior shot 34.4% from the field, including 31.3% (five-of-16) from three-point range, and 85.7% (18-of-21) at the line. Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets with 16 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals.  Lindberg finished with 15 points while Watson totaled 11. 

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, Febuary 11 at 21st-ranked UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.
