Box Score Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 64-62 win over UW-Stout Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 9-12 overall and 4-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils fall to 3-18 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
UW-L trailed early in the game 6-4 before going on a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer by
Tom Jankowski to make the score 14-6 with 13:17 left in the half. The Eagles led by as many as nine points in the half after a three from
Skylar Cameron made it 22-13 with 5:31 remaining.
Sean Wheeler's layup as time expired kept the lead at nine at the half by the margin of 29-20.
In the second half, UW-L led by as many as 11 points.
Milton Cummings' three-pointer gave the Eagles a 34-23 advantage with 18:39 remaining. UW-Stout battled back throughout the period and tied the game at 59-59 with 2:10 remaining after a jumper by D'Marcco Patrick.
Cameron answered for the Eagles, hitting a three-pointer to make it 62-59 with 1:39 left, but John Keefe of the Blue Devils hit a three of his own to tie the game again at 62-62 at the 1:04 mark. A
Connor De Bruin steal gave the Eagles possession with :17 remaining, and after a timeout,
Jared Staege hit a jumper with just :02 left to give UW-L the 64-62 victory.
UW-L shot 43.9% from the field, including 44.0% (11-of-25) from three-point range, and 60.0% (three-of-five) at the free throw line. Wheeler led the Eagles with 21 points, a career-high in points for the third straight game. Cameron added 17 points and Staege 10, including the game-winner. He also had a team-high five assists. Four players led UW-L with four rebounds.
UW-Stout shot 44.4% from the field, including 35.0% (seven-of-20) from three-point range, and 63.6% (seven-of-11) at the line. Jarvis Ragland had 13 points for UW-Stout and John Lahti added 11. Jalen Patterson led the Blue Devils with six rebounds and Patrick finished with four assists.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, February 7 hosting UW-Superior at 3 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
