Box Score Arden Hills, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 83-76 at Bethel University (Minn.) Saturday night in Robertson Center Gym. The Eagles drop to 1-3 on the season while the Royals improve to 3-0.
UWL led by as many as six points in the first half, including 14-8 with 12:34 left after a
Sean Wheeler three-point field goal. The Eagles led 16-13 with 10:23 remaining on a
Austin Fritz jumper, but the Royals scored five straight points to take a 18-16 lead with 8:31 left.
The game was tied 26-26 with 5:29 remaining in the first half when Bethel (Minn.) went on an 11-0 run to lead 37-26. The Royals led 40-32 at the half.
UWL cut the lead to 42-37 with 18:25 left in the second half on a
Devin Yurk layup, but Bethel (Minn.) used a 7-0 run to lead 49-37 with 16:26 remaining. The Royals led 52-43 when the Eagles scored five straight points on a pair of
Jared Staege free throws and Yurk three-point field goal. Bethel (Minn.) later led 65-54 with 8:35 remaining, but UWL went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 65-61 on
Lucas Collom's three-pointer with 7:27 left.
Bethel (Minn.) led 69-61 with 6:54 left on a Derek Magnuson layup before UWL used a 10-4 run to make it 73-71 with 2:52 remaining on a
Ben Meinholz steal and layup. Tim Hanson hit four straight free throws for the Royals to make it 77-71 while the Eagles missed four straight free throws. UWL cut the lead to 80-75 with :21 left on a Yurk layup, but could get no closer the rest of the game.
UWL shot 53.7% from the field, including 40.0% (six-of-15) from three-point range, and 60.0% (12-of-20) at the free throw line. Yurk led five players in double figures with 19 points while Staege finished with 13 points and Meinholz 12. Fritz and Collom each finished with 10 points. Meinholz finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
Bethel (Minn.) shot 45.0% from the field, including 36.4% (eight-of-22) from three-point range, and 70.0% (21-of-30) at the line. Trevor Hall and Bridgeport Tusler led the Royals with 17 points each while Hanson finished with 14 and Magnuson 12. Hanson had a game-high 12 rebounds.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, November 24 hosting city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) at 7 p.m.
