UW-Superior Rallies for Win over UW-La Crosse

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 64-59 to UW-Superior Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles drop to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Yellowjackets improve to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference.  It is UW-Superior's fifth win in the last six meetings with UW-L.

Sally Linzmeier gave UW-Superior a 2-0 lead on an opening game lay-up, but UW-L scored 14 of the game's next 16 points to lead 14-4 with 15:40 remaining in the first half.  The Eagles led by as many as 12 points in the first half, including 24-12 with 7:53 left after a Cameron Chapin layup.  UW-L led 29-18 at halftime.

The Eagles opened the second half on a 11-6 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 40-24 with 14:29 remaining.  UW-L led 42-26 with 14:01 left after a Maggi Bishop layup, but UW-Superior used an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 42-37 with 10:35 remaining on a Allyssa Lindberg three-point field goal.

UW-Superior cut it to 45-41 with 8:01 left, but Jenna Anderson hit back-to-back jumpers to give UW-L a 49-41 advantage with 6:45 remaining. The Yellowjackets scored the next seven points to make it 49-48 with 5:01 left before Bishop's layup and one free throw each from Elise DeNoyer and Rachel Atchison gave the Eagles a 53-48 lead with 3:56 remaining.  Brynn Liljander's three-pointer cut the lead to 53-51 and Linzmeier's jumper tied the game with 3:02 left. 

Atchison was fouled on a three-point attempt with 1:46 left and connected on all three free throws to give UW-L a 56-53 lead.  Linzmeier hit two free throws with 1:27 remaining to make it a one point game and she gave UW-Superior its first lead at 58-56 after completing a three-point play with :44 left. It was the Yellowjackets' first lead since it was 2-0.

DeNoyer missed a layup for UW-L and Linzmeier made a pair of free throws with :33 remaining for a 60-56 lead. DeNoyer cut the lead to 60-59 with :17 left on a three-point play, but Lindberg's two free throws with :16 remaining gave UW-Superior a 62-59 advantage.  UW-L turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and Lindberg was fouled. She made both free throws with :05 left for the final scoring margin.

UW-L shot 38.3% from the field, including 23.3% (three-of-13) from three-point range, and 58.8% (10-of-17) at the free throw line. Atchison led the Eagles with 14 points while Chapin finished with 10.  DeNoyer finished with nine points and 11 rebounds while Bishop totaled eight points and 11 rebounds.  Anderson had seven points and six assists.

UW-Superior shot 32.1% from the field, 21.4% (three-of-14) from three-point range, and 86.2% (25-of-29) at the line.  Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets with 29 points, including 23 in the second half.  She also had a team-high 10 rebounds and four steals. Lindberg finished with 13 points.

The teams combined for 49 fouls and 49 turnovers.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, January 14 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
