Box Score 2 Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team opened its 2014 season Friday splitting a pair of matches at the Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Sugar Loaf Classic in Gostomski Fieldhouse. The Eagles fell 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 12-15) in their opening match versus Wartburg College (Iowa) before coming back to earn a 3-0 (27-25, 27-25, 25-17) victory over Illinois Wesleyan University.

Leah Putzier recorded a team-high 17 kills while
Ashley Entinger,
Abby Scharbarth,
Ida Steingas and
Jill Entinger each finished with nine.
Jill Entinger hit .346 overall (nine kills in 26 attempts) while Scharbarth hit .308 (nine kills, one error in 26 attempts) and
Ashley Entinger .304 (nine kills, two errors in 23 attempts).
The Eagles hit .203 as a team with
Jaclyn Barrette recording 45 assists.
Putzier led four players in double figures in digs with 20 while Barrette finished with 19,
Danica Johnson 16 and
Melanie Martin 10.
In the win over Illinois Wesleyan,
Jill Entinger had a team-high 14 kills while hitting .520 (14 kills, one error in 25 attempts). Putzier recorded 10 kills. UW-L hit .188 overall with Barrette finishing with 36 assists.
Four players recorded double-digit digs with Putzier finishing with a team-leading 17.
Courtney Geisler had 16 digs wiht Barrette recording 13 and
Jill Entinger 10.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, August 30 with a pair of matches at the Sugar Loaf Classic. The Eagles face North Park University (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 4 p.m.
