UW-La Crosse Falls at Top-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 74-61 at number one ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at Bennett Court.  The Eagles drop to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers improve to 12-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference. 

UW-L raced out to an 13-6 lead with 14:11 remaining in the first half as the Eagles made five of their first seven shots from the field.  UW-L was three-of-four from three-point range to start the game, getting three-point field goals from Clint Rihn, Lucas Collom and Braden Tice.

UW-Stevens Point, ranked first on the D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, trailed 15-9 with 11:14 left when it used a 9-3 run to force a 18-18 tie with 8:26 remaining.  The Pointers took a 24-22 lead on a Alex Richard layup with 5:39 remaining, but the Eagles went on an 11-4 run to take a 33-28 advantage with 2:08 left.  UW-L led 33-32 at halftime.

The game was tied 39-39 with 17:17 left in the game when UW-Stevens Point went on a 10-2 run to lead 49-41.  UW-L cut the deficit to 49-46 with 11:34 remaining on a Tice three-pointer.  UW-Stevens Point then scored the next seven points to lead 56-46 with 8:56 left after a Austin Ryf three-pointer.

UW-L used a 8-2 run to cut it to 58-54 with 7:26 remaining, but UW-Stevens Point went on a 13-2 run to lead 71-56 with 2:49 left.  The Eagles could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the game.

UW-L shot 42.6% from the field, including 48.0% (12-of-25) from three-point range, and 100.0% (three-of-three) at the free throw line.  The Eagles were seven-of-12 (58.3%) from three-point range in the first half.

Tice led four Eagles in double figures with 16 points, going six-of-10 from the field, including four-of-five from three-point range.  He also had a team-high six rebounds.

Calahan Skogman finished with 13 points Saturday while Rihn had 11 and Luke Tweed finished with 10.

UW-Stevens Point shot 56.0% from the field, including 25.0% (three-of-12) from three-point range, and 71.4% (15-of-21) at the line.  The Pointers shot 60.9% (14-of-23) from the field in the second half.

Tyler Tillema led UW-Stevens Point with 18 points and five assists while Trevor Hass finished with 16 points.  Ryf had 10 points while Clayton Heuer recorded a game-high eight rebounds.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, January 8 hosting UW-Superior at 7:30 p.m.
