UW-L Captures NCAA Title; Eleven Earn Honors on Final Day

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team captured its 12th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Outdoor Championship Saturday night at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles finished with 66.0 team points to win the crown with UW-Eau Claire finishing second with 64.0 points. UW-Oshkosh was third with 51.5 points and UW-Whitewater fourth with 40.0.

North Central (Ill.) placed fifth (36.0) overall followed by Oneonta, N.Y. (29.0), Whittier, Calif. (26.), Haverford, Pa. (23.0), Bates, Maine (19.0). Whitworth (Wash.) and Defiance (Ohio) tied for 10th (16.0). A total of 79 teams scored points.

UW-L secured its first outdoor title since 2007 with its victory Saturday night. The 12 national crowns are the most in NCAA Division III history. The Eagles have now won 28 national track & field titles in school history, including an NCAA III leading 16 indoor.

The team won this year's indoor title March 8-9 in Naperville, Illinois. It marks the 11th time in school history UW-L has swept the indoor and outdoor titles.

UW-L head coach Josh Buchholtz earned his third career NCAA III title Saturday night, including his first outdoor championship. He led the Eagles to the 2009 and 2013 indoor crowns.

The Eagles' Isaac Vazquez and Sean Royer both placed second Saturday. Vazquez, who won the long jump title Thursday, finished second (50-5 1/2) in the triple jump while Royer was second (1:50.51) in the 800-meter run.

UW-L's David Stilin finished third (14:28.34) in the 5,000-meter run while Alex Koenen and Jacob Peterson both placed sixth Saturday. Koenen was sixth (11.02) in the 100-meter dash while Peterson was sixth (3:49.65) in the 1,500-meter run.

Jerry Kerska placed 12th (3:54.73) in the 1,500-meter run.

The Eagles had a pair of relays earn All-America honors Saturday as the 4x100-meter relay of David Sikorski, Koenen, Max Jessesski and Vazquez placed third (40.95) overall while the 4x400-meter relay of Paul Yerhot, Tyson Young, Nick Tehan and Aric Hoeschen finished fourth (3:10.53).

Vazquez ends his career with 16 NCAA III All-America honors, including nine outdoors. He earned his second straight outdoor long jump title Thursday and also won the outdoor triple jump in 2011. Vazquez won the indoor triple jump crown in March.

Hoeschen finishes his career with 13 All-America awards, including seven outdoors, while Yerhot has eight career honors, including three outdoors. Hoeschen earned four career All-America honors in the 4x400-meter relay, including being a member of the fourth-place relay in 2010 and 2011 and seventh-place in 2012. Yerhot picked up three career outdoor 4x400-meter relays, including the fourth-place showing in 2010 and 2011.

Young earned four career accolades in the 4x400-meter relay, including the fourth-place finishes in 2010 and 2011 and seventh-place showing in 2012.

Koenen, Sikorski and Tehan now have two career NCAA III Outdoor All-America recognitions. Koenen earned both of his awards this season while Sikorski and Tehan were on the seventh-place 4x400-meter relay in 2012.

Jessesski, Peterson, Royer and Stilin all picked up their first career outdoor All-America honor Saturday.
