UW-La Crosse 57, UW-Superior 56
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 57-56 victory over UW-Superior Saturday night in Mitchell Hall on
Lucas Morrissey's tip-in at the buzzer. The Eagles improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC while UW-Superior falls to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
UW-L trailed 56-55 with :10 remaining after Brendan Bauer hit a pair of free throws for UW-Superior. The Eagles'
Cory Degner drove the length of the court, and after mishandling the ball, missed a short jump shot in the lane,
Al Chery then missed a tip-in, but Morrissey got the tip-in at the buzzer as the Eagles earned their seventh win in the last nine meetings with the Yellowjackets.
UW-L led 36-35 with 14:29 remaining after a
Braden Tice three-pointer, but UW-Superior used a 9-2 run to take a 44-38 advantage with 10:45 left. The Yellowjackets led 46-40 before the Eagles scored the next seven points to lead 47-46.
The Eagles led 52-48 with 3:31 remaining before the Yellowjackets went on a 6-0 run to lead 54-52 with 1:28 left. Tice hit another three-point field goal for UW-L to give the Eagles a 55-54 advantage with :25 remaining. Bauer then made his two free throws before Morrissey's game-winning tip-in.
The game was tied 11 times and featured 12 lead changes. UW-L led 12-5 with 10:14 left in the first half, but UW-Superior came back to force a 26-26 halftime tie.
Chery led UW-L with 14 points and six rebounds while
Lucas Collom had nine points and five rebounds. Degner finished with seven points.
UW-L shot 46.8% from the field, including 37.5% (six-of-16) from three-point range, and 63.6% (seven-of-11) at the line.
Ben Aalfs led UW-Superior with 21 points and six rebounds while Adam Hjelter had 19 points. Bauer finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Yellowjackets, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, shot 47.8% from the field, including 33.3% (five-of-15) from three-point range, and 58.3% (seven-of-12) at the free throw line.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, December 14 at Carleton College (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
