Eagles Respond With Sweep of Loras After Losing To Edgewood

La Crosse, Wis. - After a tough five set loss to Edgewood University (Wis.) in the first match of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Triangular, the Eagles responded with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Loras College (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon.

UW-La Crosse 2, Edgewood University (Wis.) 3 (25-19, 16-25, 22-25, 25-23, 12-15)

With UWL trailing 6-5 in the first set, the Eagles went on a 9-1 run to lead 14-7. Edgewood would cut their deficit to 14-10 but UWL quickly extended their lead back to seven (20-13). Edgewood would not get any closer than four (21-17) as UWL took the first set 25-19.
Edgewood would open the second set with a 5-0 run and extended their lead to 13-6. Five straight points by Edgewood would put the up 20-8 and UWL would not recover as they dropped the second set 25-16.
The third set was very similar to the second set as Edgewood built an early 14-7 lead. The Eagles would slowly chip away at their deficit and pull to with in 21-19. After a Payton Millin put Edgewood up 22-19 with a kill, UWL scored three straight including two kills by Jaiden Lee to tie it at 22-22. Three consecutive kills for Edgewood ended UWL's comeback as they fell 25-22.
Edgewood would score the first six points of the fourth set and 11-4 before UWL slowly started to close the gap. An 8-2 run for the Eagles made it 13-11, After Natalie Murphy put Edgewood up 20-17, UWL would get two kills from Sydney Marx along with a kill by Charley Casey and Jaiden Lee put the UWL up 23-22. Ali Dehnicke would give UWL a 24-22 with a kill of her before Millin scored on a kill for Edgewood (24-23). Maddy Wilson would record the final kill of the set to give UWL a 25-23 win and force a fourth set.
With the tie scored 3-3, Edgewood scored five of the next seven points to lead 8-5. Back-to-back kills by Marx and Wilson pulled the Eagles to with in 10-9. But that would be as close as the Eagles would get as Edgewood scored five of the final eight points to win the fifth set 15-12.

FROM THE BOX SCORE

Marx led the Eagles with 11 kills while Casey finished with 10.
UWL combined for 15 total blocks led by Maddy Wilson with nine assisted blocks while Annie Werner finished with six and Marx added five.
Megan Lund led the Eagles with 24 assists and 17 digs.
Megan Jasperson led the Eagle defense with 20 digs while Ali Dehnicke added 19 digs.

UW-La Crosse 3, Loras College (Iowa) 0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-11)

The Eagles offense would hit an impressive .538 including 16 kills and just two errors on 26 total attempts to control the first set as they won 25-14. Trailing 11-9, UWL went on a 13-2 run to break open the set 22-12. Four different players recorded at least one kill during the run while Jasperson and Lexi Champeau each had a service ace.
Loras would start fast in set two as they scored 11 of the first 15 points to lead 11-4. The Eagles would slowly chip away at their deficit and pull with in 16-15. Loras get a kill and force two UWL errors to extend their lead back to 19-15. Down 22-18, UWL got back-to-back kills from Grace Nommensen along with kills from Lund and Wilson to take a 23-22 lead. A block and a service ace by Cat Meyer put Loras up 24-23. The Eagles defense force back-to-back hitting errors to put UWL up 25-24 but then an Eagle service error tied the set 25-25. Wilson and Dehnicke would record consecutive kills to seal a 27-25 set two win for UWL.
The Eagles would start off with a 6-1 lead in the third set and never trail as they won set three 25-11. A 7-0 run sparked by three kills from Nommensen and one each from Casey and Wilson helped turn a five point lead into a 13 point lead (20-7).

FROM THE BOX SCORE

UWL hit .271 as a team with 44 kills including a team high 11 from Werner.
Dehnicke added 10 kills and eight digs for the Eagles while Grace Nommensen finished with nine kills, zero hitting errors and a .563 hitting percentage.
Lund finished with 18 assists and eight digs. Champeau chipped in 15 assists.
Jasperson finished with a match high 17 digs.
