Eagles Earn Split At SMU Triangular; Fall To St. Mary's; Defeat Luther College

Winona, Minn. - After a 10 day lay off, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team was back in action as they played a triangular at St. Mary's University (Minn.) where they earned a split falling to St. Mary's before defeating Luther College.

UW-La Crosse 2, St. Mary's University 3 (25-20,18-25, 22-25, 27-25, 13-15)

After St. Mary's took a 7-5 lead on a kill by Ayla Olson, UWL scored five unanswered points to take a 10-7 lead. Ali Dehnicke sparked the run with two service aces. A UWL hitting error would cut the Cardinals deficit to 13-12 but a 5-1 run by the Eagles would put UWL up 18-13. St. Mary's would again close to with in one (21-20) but UWL would score the final four points including three straight service aces by Megan Jasperson to give the Eagles a 25-21 set one win.
The second set started out with the two teams trading points until the Cardinals used an 8-2 run to take a 19-12 lead. After UWL pulled to with in 19-15, St. Mary's scored six of the final nine points to take set two 25-18.
UWL opened the third set with a 7-3 run and extended their lead to 11-5 before St. Mary's went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-13 lead.The Cardinals would take a 21-17 on a Brianna Hanneken kill but the Eagles would score five of the next seven points to pull with in 23-22. St. Mary's would then force back-to-back Eagle errors to win the third set 25-22.
Trailing 7-3 in the fourth set, UWL slowly chipped away by scoring 10 of the next 15 points to lead 13-11. A Maddie Baker kill would put the Cardinals up 16 but back-to-back kills by Annie Werner and Bella Kottke followed by a Cardinal hitting error out UWL up 18-16. St. Mary's then scored six of the next seven points to retake the lead at 22-19. Kills from Kottke, Jaiden Lee, Maddy Wilson and Dehnicke would tie the set at 23. After the the two teams traded kills, UWL took a 25-24 lead on a Wilson service ace before a service error tied it back at 25. UWL then got a kill by Dehnicke and a solo block from Werner to secure the fourth set win for the Eagles 27-25.
With the fifth set tie at 2-2, St. Mary's used a 6-2 run to lead 8-4 at the technical timeout. UWL would cut their deficit to 9-8 before St. Mary's scored three straight (12-8) to force an Eagle timeout.

FROM THE BOXSCORE

Dehnicke led the Eagles with a double-double as she finsihed with 14 kills and 16 digs.
Wilson added 10 kills for the Eagles while Werner had eight and Nommensen finished with 7.
Lexi Champeau joined Dehnicke with a double-double as she finished with 23 assists and 13 digs.
Megan Jasperson led the Eagles with 21 digs while Kennedy Myers finished with 14 digs.

UW-La Crosse 3, Luther College (Iowa) 1 (27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21)

With the first set tied 9-9, UWL scored four of the next five points to take a 13-10 lead. Luther responded with a 5-1 run to lead 15-14 at the technical timeout. Trailing 19-17, the Norse would get kills from Julianne Lundvall and Lisa Schiltgen along with an Eagle hitting error to take a 20-19 lead. Trailing 24-23, UWL got a kill from Wilson followed by a service ace by Braylin Siverling to put the Eagles up 25-24. The Norse would tie it at 25 on an Eagles attacking error; however, UWL would get back-to-back kills by Lee and Werner to give UWL a 27-25 win in set one.
Both teams would open the second set with four point runs before the Eagles scored five straight (9-4) to force a Luther timeout. Three straight points including a service ace from Jasperson would give UWL a 17-12 lead. Trailing 22-19, the Norse scored three straight (22-22) to force a UWL timeout. Werner's kill would stop the Norse run and the Eagles would force a Luther hitting error followed by a Kottke kill to secure the set two win 25-22.
Luther jumped out to a 5-0 lead as they got two service aces from Iris Elias and two kills by Ruby Gerhard. Rebecca Krause's kill tied it at 6-6;however, Luther scored seven of the next eight points to take a 13-8 lead. UWL would slowly chip away at their deficit and pulled to with in 19-17 before Luther got back-to-back kills to extend their lead to 21-17. UWL would not get any closer than two as Luther took set three 25-22.
A mini 3-0 run early in the fourth set would give UWL a 11-8 lead. A Lundvall kill would even the score at 13-13 before the Eagles took a 15-13 lead on Andrea Waldera's kill and a Norse hitting error. Out of the technical timeout UWL scored four of the next five points to lead 19-14 and force a Luther timeout. UWL would not allow Luther to get any closer than three (24-21) to take set four 25-21.

FROM THE BOXSCORE

Werner and Wilson led the Eagles offense with nine and eight kills, respectively.
Dehnicke added six kills while adding 19 digs.
Lund finished with 18 assists to go along with eight digs.
Jasperson led UWL with 20 digs.

UP NEXT

UWL will back in action on Friday as they Superior, Wis. to play in the Stinger Classic Tournament hosted by UW-Superior September 18 and 19. On Friday the Eagles play Augsburg University (Minn.) at 5:00 p.m. and then face UW-Superior at 7:00 p.m.
