Baseball Falls In Season Opener To North Park University

Sauget, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team dropped its season opener 2-1 to North Park University on Friday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: North Park University (Ill.) 2, UW-La Crosse 1
  • Location: Arsenal BG Park, Sauget, Ill.  
  • Records: UW-La Crosse 0-1, North Park University (Ill.) 3-5
  • Up Next: UWL stays in Sauget, Ill. for game two of the weekend on Saturday when they face host Webster University (Mo.) at 12 p.m. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWL would get on the score board first as they scored a run on a hit and an error. Charley Rowan led off the first inning with a single and then stole second base. Chris Calico would then reach on a fielding error which Rowan was able to score on. 
  • UWL would threaten again in the bottom of the fourth inning as Luke Walton singled and stole second base. Brady Lash would then single up the middle but Walton would be thrown out at the plate for the seond out of the inning. 
  • The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Eagles until the top of the eighth inning when North Park scored two runs on two hits. With one out, Kupono Akaka singled and advanced to second when Joe Perona was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout was recorded for the second out, John Greenwood doubled to left field which scored Akaka and Perona for the 2-1 lead. 
  • UWL would go down in order in the bottom of the eighth and manage only a two out single in the bottom of the ninth. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with one run on seven hits.
  • Rowan led the Eagles offense going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. 
  • Austin Olla (0-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed two runs on two while striking out three in 2.0 innings of work.
  • Owen Deprez started the game on the mound for the Eagles as he gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out six in 7.0 innings. 
  • St. Olaf finished with two runs on four hits and two walks.
  • Jackson Nuese (2-0) earned the win for North Park as he allowed one run on six hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings. 
  • Ethan Condit (S-1) picked up the save has he pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit while striking out three. 
  • Greenwood led North Park offensively going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
