Eagles Offense Erupts For 15 Runs; Burrill Drives In 8 Runs

Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse erupted for 15 runs as they defeated Union College (N.Y.) on Saturday morning.

  • Up Next: The Eagles spring break trip continues as they will be back in action on Sunday morning when they play Colby College (ME) at 11 a.m. (CST). 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning as Sam Viniard led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Andrew Palm. Keegan Fleischman singled up the middle to score Viniard and Brady Burrill tripled to score both Palm and Fleischman. Chris Calico would then bring Burrill home with a sacrifice bunt to put UWL up 4-0. 
  • Burrill would put the Eagles up 7-0 in the third inning as as he a three-run home run which scored both Palm and Matthew Sonnenschein who had both reached via a hit batsman. 
  • Union would get two runs back in the bottom of the third inning on Cooper Ames sacrifice fly and Evan Lagemann's RBI single. 
  • With one out in the fifth inning, Palm walked and advanced to third on a double by Sonnenschein. Burrill would then single which scored both Palm and Sonnenschein to put UWL up 9-0. 
  • Union got a run in their half of the fifth inning on a fielders choice RBI. 
  • The Eagles would extend their lead to 10-3 in the sixth inning as Evan Schmidt singled and Palm walked before Sonnenschein singled to score Schmidt. 
  • UWL would add four runs on two hits in the seventh inning for the final score of 14-3. Sonnenschein would drive in two runs with a double while Schmidt drove in a run with a single, Palm walked with the bases loaded to score a run and Burrill hit a sacrifice fly. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 15 runs on 13 hits and nine walks.
  • Burrill led the Eagles offense as he went 3-for-3 with a walk, eight RBIs and two runs scored. The eight RBIs is the second most in a game by an Eagle all-time. 
  • Sonnenschein was also 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Palm finished 1-for-1 with two walks, four runs scored and an RBI. 
  • Keegan Wheeler (1-0) came on in a relief to earn the win as he went 3.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits and no walks while striking out six. Logan Zickert started the game for the Eagles as he went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits 
  • Union finished with three runs on 11 hits and two walks. 
  • Ryan Calvario (0-1) suffered the loss for Union as he allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.0 innings of work. 
  • Lagemann led the offense for the Garnet Chargers as he finished 3-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI.
