Baseball Defeats Ripon and St. Johns On Day 2 Of Spring Trip

Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team picked up two wins on day two of their spring break trip as they defeated Ripon College (Wis.) and Saint John's University (Minn.) on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One - Ripon College
  • Ripon got the scoreboard first as they scored two runs on one hit and an error in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Pankratz brought both runners in to score when he reached on a throwing error. 
  • The score would remain that way until the top of the fifth inning when the Eagles would put three runs on the board. With one out, AJ Levy would reach after being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Chris Calico then walked followed by a single by Charley Rowan which scored Levy and moved Calico to second. Then with two outs, Brady Lash and Keegan Fleischman each singled to score both Calico and Rowan to put the Eagles on top 3-2. 
  • Ripon would even the score in their half of the fifth they loaded the bases with two outs. Alex Ramus would then earn a walk to score Gabriel Kennedy to tie it at 3-3. 
  • Neither team would be able to score over the next four innings as extra innings would be needed. Fleischman led off the bottom of the 10th by being hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a Luke Walton sacrifice bunt. Brady Burrill would then walk before Calvin Hargrove flew out to center field for the first out. Levy then tripled to left field to score both Burrill and Fleischman to put UWL up 5-3. Calico then singled to score Levy and make it 6-3.
  • That would be all the support relief pitcher Austin Olla would need as retired the Red Hawks in order in the bottom of the 10th inning. 
Game Two - Saint Johns University
  • Saint John's took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Alex Matchey reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a throwing and later scored on a passed ball.
  • The score would stay that way until Saint John's added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning to lead 4-0. Zach Helfman would hit a two-out home run in the seventh inning while Justin Brooks and Brendan Hemr each drove in a run with a single. 
  • UWL would finally get their offense going in their half of the eighth inning as Rowan led off with a walk and advanced to second on Emiliano Ramos' single. Lash would then double which scored both Ramos and Rowan to cut the UWL deficit to 4-2. Lash would move to third on Sam Viniard's ground out and score when Walton grounded out to first. Fleischman and Evan Schmidt would hit back-to-back doubles to even the score at 4-4. 
  • Lash would come into pitch the ninth inning for the Eagles and he would retire the side in order including striking out two. Then in the bottom of the ninth, Calico led off with a single and advanced to second on Rowan's sacrifice bunt. Ramos was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second base. Lash then doubled which brought in Calico from second for the walk off win for the Eagles. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
Game One - Ripon College
  • Offensively, UWL finished with six runs on 10 hits and four walks.
  • Lash led the Eagle offense going 2-for-5 with a run batted in (RBI) while Levy was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 
  • Also driving in runs for the Eagles was Calico,  Rowan and Fleischman.
  • Olla (1-1) earned the win for the Eagles as he came on in relief to pitch the final 4.2 innings and allowing two hits and three walks while striking out three. Owen Deprez made the start for the Eagles as he allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and five walks while striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work. 
  • Matthew Lu (0-1) suffered the loss for Ripon as he allowed one run on two hit batsman in one inning of work. Brady Wotruba started for Ripon as he went eight innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. 
  • Kennedy led the Red Hawks going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 
Game Two - Saint John's University
  • Offensively the Eagles scored five runs on eight hits and three walks. 
  • Lash once again led the Eagles as he went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.
  • Schmidt drove in a run and finished 2-for-4 at the plate. 
  • Lash (1-0) earned the win on the mound for UWL as he pitched a clean ninth inning including two strikeouts. Chayce Osterhaus started the game for the Eagles as he allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out six. 
  • Ben Rudser (0-2) came on in relief for the Johnnies and suffered the loss as he allowed one run on two hits and a strikeout in .2 innings. Hunter Hoen got the start for Saint Johns as he went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
  • Justin Brooks and and Zach Helfmann each went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Johnnies offensively.
