Wheaton, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team finished second on the final day of action at the Pete Willson Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational Saturday in King Arena.
UWL finished with 148.5 team points while Roanoke College (Va.) won the team title with 154.0. UW-Eau Claire was third with 137.5 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 133.0 and Cornell College (Iowa) fifth with 112.5. A total of 30 teams have scored points.
Eight of UWL's 10 wrestlers placed in the tournament, including a pair of champions.
Tanner Gerber captured the 165-pound title with a 5-0 record. After finishing 3-0 on Friday, he won by technical fall (16-0, 3:00) over Brian Petry of Cornell (Iowa) in the semifinals and won the title with a decision (5-1) over Keegan Demarest of Messiah College (Ohio).
Tanner Gerber went 5-0 to win the 165-pound title.
The Eagles'
Sedeeq AlObaidi won the 184-pound title with a 4-0 record. He went 2-0 on Friday and earned a pair of victories on Saturday. AlObaidi won by decision (5-3) over Zak McPhee of UW-Eau Claire in the semifinals and took the division with a decision (7-3) over Jackson Davis of the University of Chicago (Ill.) in the title match.
UWL's
Eddie Simes was second at 174-pounds with a tournament record of 4-1. He won by decision (4-1) over Toren Vandenbush of MSOE (Wis.) in the semifinals, but lost by fall (5:53) to Carson Trotzer of UW-Stevens Point in the championship match.
Markos Mihalolpoulos was third at 285-pounds. He went 3-0 on Friday and opened Saturday's action falling by sudden victory (2-1) to UW-Eau Claire's Sloan Welch in the semifinals. Mihalopoulos came back with a win by decision (11-8) over Thomas Lunt of John Carroll University (Ohio) in the consolation semifinals and took third-place with a fall (3:00) over the University of Mount Union's (Ohio) Steven Marra. Mihalopoulos went 5-1 in the tournament.
UWL's
Wyatt Magolski (133-pounds) and
Talan Schutte (165) each finished fourth. Magolski went 6-1 in the tournament. He won by fall (6:50) over Nolan Frye of Mount Union (Ohio) in Saturday's consolation fifth round. Magolski won by medical forfeit in the consolation semifinals and finished fourth after losing by decision (9-4) to Wyatt Unser of UW-Eau Claire.
Schutte finished 4-2 in the two-day invitational. He lost by sudden victory (4-1) to Justin Fortugno of UW-Whitewater in the semifinals before coming back to earn a win by decision (7-4) over Ohio Northern University's Casper Caizzo in the consolation semifinals. Schutte finished fourth after losing by decision (4-1) to Sean Conway of the University of Chicago (Ill.) in the third-place match.
Sedeeq AlObaidi won the 184-pound championship.
Aidan Baum (149-pounds) placed sixth and
Joe Penchi (157) eighth. Baum went 3-3 overall, winning by decision (5-1) over Owen Adlfinger of Cornell (Iowa) in the consolation fifth round on Saturday. He lost by fall (:56) to Landon Church of UW-Eau Claire in the consolation semifinals and by major decision (12-1) to Dalton Monger of Messiah College (Pa.) for fifth-place.
Penchi also went 3-3 in the tournament. He lost by fall (1:06) to Jaryn Hartranft of Wilkes University (Pa.) in the consolation fifth round and by decision (12-10) to Christopher Acuna of Concordia College Moorhead (Minn.) in the seventh-place match.
The Eagles'
Cole Gentsch went 2-2 at 125-pounds and
Kash Macumber finished 0-1 at 197-pounds on Friday.
