Baseball Sees WIAC Tournament Come To An End; Awaits NCAA III At-Large Bid

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team fell to top seed UW-Whitewater in an elimination game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament (presented by Culvers) Friday afternoon.

  • Up Next: UWL now waits to see if they get an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association III Championships which will be announced on Monday, May 12 at 11 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWL would get on the scoreboard first as they scored two runs during their first at-bat. With one out, Nate Witte, George Seaman and Mac Born hit back-to-back-to-back singles to give UWL a 1-0 lead. Jack Olver then hit a double to score Seaman. 
  • The Warhawks would respond with four runs in their half of the first inning to take a 4-2 lead. Aaron Holland led of with a single and scored on Matt Scolan's double. After Scolan advanced on a wild pitch, Eli Frank hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. Adam Cootway and Andy Thies followed with solo home runs to give UW-Whitewater the 4-2 lead. 
  • The score remained 4-2 until the top of the fifth inning as the Eagles regained the lead. With one out, Chris VandenHeuvel singled up the middle. After a fly out to right field, Seaman singled to center field. Born would then hit his sixth home run of the season to give UWL the 5-4 lead. 
  • Dominik McVay would double to lead of the bottom of the sixth inning for the Warhawks. After a Warhawk strikeout, Scolan gave the Warhawks a 6-5 lead with a two-run home run. 
  • UWL would manage just one base runner (Luke Walton single in 8th inning) over the final three innings.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with five runs on 12 hits and one walk.
  • Born led the Eagles offense finished 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.
  • Seaman (2-for5), Olver (2-for-4) and Rajkovich (2-for-4) all finished with multi-hit games. 
  • AJ Curtis (4-2) came on in relief for the Eagles to pitch the final 7.2 innings to suffer the loss as he allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven. Isaiah Katz got the start for UWL as he allowed four runs on five hits in 0.1 innings. 
  • The Warhawks finished with six runs on 12 hits and two walks. 
  • Logan Eisenbarth (5-0) pitched the final 4.1 innings to earn the win for the Warhawks as he allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four. Max Huseboe started for the Warhawks as he allowed five runs on 10 hits while striking out three in 4.2 innings. 
  • Scolan (2-for-4, HR, three RBIs), Cootway (2-for-4, HR) and Thies (2-for-4, HR) led the Warhawks offense.
