CMS Forces Decisive NCAA III Regional Championship With Win Over Eagles

La Crosse, Wis. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) forces a second National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) III Regional Championship game as they defeated UW-La Crosse in game one on Sunday.

  • NCAA La Crosse Regional: UW-La Crosse is the top seed in the regional while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the #3 seed. 
  • Up Next: UW-La Crosse and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) will now play at 2 p.m. (CST) for the chance to advance to the NCAA III Super Regional May 23-24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Stags took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with two runs on two hits and three walks. With one out, Alex Henderson singled and moved to second when Andrew Mazzone was intentionally walked. Bryce Didrickson singled to left field to score Henderson. Back-to-back walks would force Mazzone in to give the Stags the 2-0 lead.
  • The Eagles would get those two runs back in their half of the first inning as Nate Witte hit a one out double followed by George Seaman's 16th home run of the season to tie it at 2. 
  • The score did not stay tied long as Dillon Martin hit a one out single and Henderson followed with his sixth home run of the NCAA III regional to put the Stags back up 4-2. 
  • A solo home run by Slader Spoor in the top of the fourth inning would extend the Stags lead to 5-2 over the Eagles. 
  • Then in the sixth inning with two outs, Mazzone was intentionally walked followed by Didrickson drawing a walk. Rider Gordon the hit a double to left field that scored Mazzone to make it 6-2. 
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps would take control in the eighth inning as they scored four to take a 10-2 lead. Henderson led off the inning with his second home run of the game followed by back-to-back walks for Mazzone and Didrickson. After a pop out, Carter Bennett hit the Stags fourth home run of the game for the 10-2 lead. 
  • Henderson would hit his third home run of the game in the top of the ninth to make it 11-2.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with two runs on nine hits and five walks.
  • Seaman (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs), VandenHeuvel (2-for-4, walk) and Luke Walton (2-for-3, walk) led the Eagles offense.
  • Isaiah Katz (7-2) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on six hits and 10 walks while striking out nine in 7.0 innings. 
  • The Stags finished with 11 runs on 10 hits and 12 walks. 
  • Henderson led the Stags offensively finished 4-for-5 with three home runs and four RBIs. 
  • PJ Wendler (4-1) pitched the complete game for the win as he allowed two runs on nine hits and five walks while striking out eight.
