Clermont, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team went 1-1 Wednesday afternoon as it continues its spring trip. The Eagles fell, 5-4 in eight innings, to Ramapo College (N.Y.) before earning a 4-1 victory over Rutgers University-Camden (N.J.).
UWL is now 11-5 on the season.
Ramapo (N.Y.) would get the scoring started off an Avery Contura ground out which scored Clay'le Correa-Vanness in the bottom of the first inning. Later in the inning, Hannah Hensler was hit-by-pitch with the bases lead to score Katie Rygiel. Rebecca Airel later scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, UWL would cut the lead to 3-2 on a
Kyra Lard double knocking in
Ava Jaehnke and
Carly Gross.
Marissa Pease' RBI single scored
Cristin Casey to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth.
In the top of the eighth, Kaeley Niemic came in on a fielding error to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Ramapo (N.J.) earned the win in the bottom of the eighth with Niah Murphy and Kori Gargiulo both scoring on an UWL error.
Madi Lee (3-1) recorded the loss, pitching 7.1 innings with three strikeouts and allowing three earned runs.
Lard went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double, while Gross finished 1-for-2 with one run, two stolen bases, and a walk. Lard became UWL's career leader in doubles with 54, breaking
Jordyn McCormack's (2021-24) record of 53.
Brooke Knight (2-0) earned the win for Ramapo (N.J.), pitching 3.1 innings with one strikeout and one earned run.
Rygiel finished 1-for-2 with a run, double, and a walk while Hensler finished 1-for-1 with an RBI.
UWL tallied three runs in the bottom of the third in its win over Rutgers-Camden (N.J.).
Lindsay Steien hit a two RBI single, scoring Lard and Gross.
Maddy Bornbach scored on an error, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Rutgers-Camden's (N.J.) Luci Hutchinson doubled scoring Bella Lynch to cut the lead to 3-1.
Casey scored on a
Nicole Zoellner ground out in the bottom of the sixth to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Brynne Bieri (2-1) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings, recording two strikeouts while allowing one run. Niemic picked up her first save on the season, pitching 2.0 innings.
Bornbach went 2-for-2 with a run and walk while Steien finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Molly Skelly (0-2) would get the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, recording two strikeouts and allowing three earned runs.
Lynch went 2-for-3 with a run and double while Hutchinson finished 1-for-2 with a double and RBI.
UWL returns to action Thursday, March 20 against Babson College (Mass.) at 10:30 a.m. (Central) and Hope College (Mich.) at 1 p.m. (Central).
