Clermont, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team swept both games on its spring trip Sunday, earning a 6-4 win over Coe College (Iowa) and 6-1 over The College of Wooster (Ohio).
UWL is now 9-3 on the season.
In the win over Coe (Iowa), UWL scored three runs in the top of the first.
Brooke Howard scored on a
Kyra Lard double for the game's first run. Lard later came in on
Maddy Bornbach's single. Two batters later,
Lindsay Steien's sacrifice fly knocked in
Abbey Bosch for a 3-0 lead.
Addie Menke got the scoring started for Coe College (Iowa) after coming in on a wild pitch. Jessica Meisinger's singled scored Marisa Vodicka and Maddie Harris to tie the game.
The Kohawks took a 4-3 lead in the third when Vodicka scored off a Haley Sanders' single.
UWL responded in the top of the fourth to tie the game with Howard scoring on a Bosch single.
The Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth on Lard's RBI single knocking in Howard. UWL extended the lead to 6-4 in the seventh on Bornbach scoring on
Marissa Pease's double.
Madi Lee (3-0) earned the win, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs with eight strikeouts. Steien went 1.1 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
Lard led the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Howard finished 2-for-4 with three runs while Bosch went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Bornbach went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Devan Baggett (0-4) suffered the loss for Coe (Iowa), pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six runs (five earned). Vodicka went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Wooster (Ohio) took a 1-0 lead over UWL in the top of the first with Jillian Meszaros scoring off a Julia Jennings' ground out.
UWL starting the scoring in the bottom of the first, where Howard scored off a Bosch ground out to the game and Bornbach scored as
Nicole Zoellner reached first on an error.
In the bottom of the second, Howard's single scored
Josie Flom for a 3-1 lead.
Carly Gross later doubled to score Stein.
Bornbach a two-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Kaeley Niemic (3-0) earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run with five strikeouts. Carmen Follete earned her third save of the year, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and one strikeout.
Bornbach finished with two hits, while Howard, Lard, Flom, and Gross finished with one.
Tori Conner (2-3) picked up the loss for Wooster (Ohio). She recorded a strikeout with six hits and two walks in 4.2 innings. Meszaros went 2-for-4 with a run. Conner finished with two hits while Shelby Ellsworth and Emma Hetkey finished with one.
UWL returns to action Monday, March 17 against the University of Chicago (Ill.) at 1 p.m. (Central) and SUNY Cortland (N.Y.) at 3:15 p.m. (Central).
