De Pere, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team captured the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament title with a 84-58 victory over host St. Norbert College (Wis.) Tuesday night in the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Eagles, ranked third on the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, improve to 10-1 on the season in their final non-conference regular season game. The Green Knights drop to 7-4 overall.
St. Norbert (Wis.) took a 4-2 lead on a Will Stuckey layup, but UWL's
JJ Paider's layup and
Sam Grieger's three-pointer gave the Eagles a 7-4 advantage and UWL would never trail the rest of the game. Cole Uhlenbrauck's three-pointer with 14:52 left in the first half cut UWL's lead to 12-11, but the Eagles went on a 12-3 run to extend the lead to 24-14 with 12:03 remaining on a Paider layup.
A Cam Lathos jumper for the Green Knights capped an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to 25-22 with 8:09 left. Baskets from
Dustin Derousseau, Grieger and Paider gave the Eagles a 31-22 lead. UWL took its largest of the first half at 42-28 with 2:19 remaining on a Paider layup before St. Norbert (Wis.) ended the half on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 44-35.
St. Norbert (Wis.) cut the deficit to 49-43 with 17:49 left on a Mason Frieburger layup, but the Green Knights could get no closer the rest of the game.
Carson Bauer's three-pointer and Grieger's tip-in made it 54-43.
Conner Pytleski's three-point field goal for St. Norbert (Wis.) cut it to 54-46, but UWL went on a 11-0 run to take a 65-46 lead with 12:11 remaining. The Eagles led by as many as 27 points in the second half.
Dustin Derousseau had 14 points and five rebounds Tuesday night.
UWL shot 54.0% from the field Tuesday, including 45.5% (10-of-22) from three-point range, and 50.0% (six-of-12) at the free throw line. The Eagles shot 60.0% (18-of-30) from the field in the first half.
Grieger led UWL with 22 points while adding four rebounds and four assists. Paider recorded his second straight double-double in the tournament with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He also had four steals and four assists. Paider finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds in UWL's 101-68 win over North Central University (Minn.) on Monday. Derousseau finished with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists in Tuesday's win.
Grieger, Paider and Derousseau were selected to the all-tournament team with Grieger earning Most Valuable Player honors.
Devon Fielding and
Eli Schroeder each finished with nine points on Tuesday with Fielding adding six rebounds.
St. Norbert (Wis.) shot 41.4% from the field, including 31.3% (five-of-16) from three-point range, and 45.5% (five-of-11) at the line.
Pytleski led the Green Knights with 14 points and six rebounds. Lathos finished with nine points while Stuckey and Charlie Geske each had seven.
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 3 hosting UW-River Falls at 5 p.m. in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams.
