Baseball Falls to UW-Stevens Point In Opening Game of WIAC Tournament; Plays UW-Oshkosh in Elimination Game

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell to UW-Stevens Point in the opening round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culvers) Thursday afternoon. UWL now plays UW-Oshkosh in an elimination game on Friday morning.

  • Up Next: The Eagles will play UW-Oshkosh at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning in an elimination game. UW-Oshkosh lost to top seed UW-Whitewater 5-1 Thursday afternoon. UW-La Crosse won the regular season series with UW-Oshkosh 3-1 which was played at Copeland Park in La Crosse, Wis.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when UW-Stevens Point put a run on the scoreboard. Bradley Comer led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and error. Comer then gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead when he scored on a single by Trent Van Ess. 
  • Then in the top of the fifth inning, Anthony Tomczak gave UW-Stevens Point a 3-0 lead with a two run home run. 
  • The Eagles would threaten in the bottom of the sixth inning as Mac Born reached on a fielders choice and moved to third on a George Seaman double with one out. However, UW-Stevens Point starting pitcher, Nick Paulsen, recorded a strikeout and a fly out to end the Eagles scoring chance. 
  • UWL would only manage one more base runner over the final three innings. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with six hits and a walk.
  • Born finished 2-for-4 while Seaman was 1-for-4 with a double.
  • Tyler Schmitt (3-3) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out 10 in 6.2 innings or work.
  • UW-Stevens Point scored three runs on eight hits and two walks.
  • Tomczak led the Pointers going 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Paulsen (4-1) earned the win for UW-Stevens Point by pitching a complete game and allowing six hits while striking out 11.
