Baseball Drops Extra Inning Contest to Coe College in NCAA III Regional; Play Benedictine in Elimination Game

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a 12-11, 10 inning game in the winners bracket of the National Collegiate Athletic Assocition (NCAA) III Regional Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park.

  • Up Next: UW-La Crosse will now play Benedictine (Ill.) in an elimination game tonight. The Kohawks will then play the winner of Benedictine University (Ill.) and UW-La Crosse on Sunday at 11 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWL was the visiting team and got off to a fast start as Nate Witte reached via a hit batsman to lead off and scored on Chris VandenHeuvel's ninth home run of the season to put the Eagles up 2-0. Mac Born then walked and moved to third on a single by George Seaman. Anthony Vivian sacrifice fly would score Born to make it 3-0 Eagles. Jack Olver then singled to move Seaman to second and then after a strikeout, Tim Urlaub walked walked to load the bases. Jack Moran followed with a single that scored both Seaman and Olver to give UWL a 5-0 lead.
  • The Kohawks would get a run back in their half of the first inning on a solo home run by Jake Brosius. 
  • In the third inning, Coe would get a run on an RBI double by Ryan Thoreson to cut the Kohawks deficit to 5-2. 
  • The Eagles got a solo home run in the in the top of the sixth inning from Andrew Rajkovich to make the score 6-2.
  • Coe would score six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. The Kohawks would get a three run home run from Creighton Kreshel, a pinch hit solo home run by Gavin Guns and a two run home run by Brosius. 
  • The Eagles would tie the game up in the top of the seventh as Vivian hit a 2-out, 2-Run home run for the Eagles. It was Vivian's third home run of the regional. 
  • Coe would put the first two batters on to start the bottom of the seventh when Tucker Bouche came on in relief for the Eagles. Bouche would get a groundout fielders choice followed by two strikeouts to get out of the inning.
  • With one out in the eighth inning, Witte singled and stole second base. VandenHeuvel then doubled to score Witte. Then with two outs, Seaman singled to left which scored VandenHeuvel to give the Eagles a 10-8 lead. 
  • The Kohawks would get the two runs back on solo home runs by Jon Wille and Tyce Johnson.
  • In the top of the 10th inning, VandenHeuvel would hit his second home run of the game to give UWL an 11-10 lead.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Brosius hit his third home run of the game to tie the game at 11. Johnson would then follow that with his second home run of the game to give the Kohawks the 12-11 win. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 11 runs on 13 hits and six walks.
  • VandenHeuvel led the Eagles offense going 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Moran finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Vivian was 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk and three RBIs.
  • Isaiah Katz (6-5) suffered the loss for the Eagles on the mound as he pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three.
  • Coe finished with 12 runs on 15 hits and five walks.
  • Ethan O'Donnell (8-1) came on in relief to earn the win as he gave up three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out one.
  • Brosius led the Kohawks going 3-for-5 with three home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored. 
  • Johnson was also 3-for-5 with two home runs, two RBIs and two runs scored.
