Eagles Fall to UW-Whitewater In WIAC Championship; Wait to Hear About NCAA At-Large Bid

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell to top seed and nationally ranked UW-Whitewater in the Championship Game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships (presented by Culvers).

  • National Ranking: UW-La Crosse is ranked 16th on this weeks D3baseball.com Top-25 polls while UW-Whitewater is ranked eighth.
  • Up Next: The Eagles will now wait to see if they get an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III National Championships. The 64 team field will be on announced on Monday, May 13th with the selection show happening on 11:00 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Witte led off the game with a with his fifth home run of the season to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
  • UW-Whitewater would respond in the bottom half of the first inning with seven runs on seven hits. UW-Whitewater recorded four consecutive hits followed by a walk and three more hits. Dominik McVay provided the biggest hit with a three-run home run to give the Warhawks a 7-1 lead.
  • The Warhawks would add two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run from Andy Thies to put UW-Whitewater up 9-1.
  • The Eagles would get a run back in the top of the fourth inning as Chris VandenHeuvel reached on a dropped third strike and advanced to third on single by Mac Born. George Seaman then grounded into a double play which allowed VandenHeuvel score to make it 9-2.
  • The score remained 9-2 until the seventh inning when Thies stole home for the Warhawks to extend their lead to 10-2.
  • In the top of the eighth, Born drove in a run with a double that allowed Witte to score from first after reaching on a fielders choice.
  • A Matt Scolan solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning put UW-Whitewater up 11-3

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with three runs on eight hits.
  • Born led the Eagles going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Witte was 1-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. 
  • Alex Redman (2-3) made the start on the mound for the Eagles and suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on five hits and a walk in 0.1 innings of work.
  • The Warhawks had 11 runs on 13 hits and eight walks as a team.
  • Thies led the Warhawks as he finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored while Scolan was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored.
  • Jack Hagen (8-0) earned the win for the Warhawks on the mound as he allowed three runs on eights while striking out eight in 9.0 innings.
