La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season with a 13-12 win over UW-Eau Claire Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds drop to 10-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
UWL scored the first six goals of the game, including four in the first quarter.
Britta Nelson scored with 12:53 left off a
Kiersten Pelletier assist.
Grace Willmott scored on a free position shot with 12:23 remaining to make it 2-0. Willmott scored an unassisted goal with 6:29 left and Pelletier finished the scoring in the first quarter with 4:19 remaining on
Megan Maloney's assist.
Willmott (14:24 left) and
Ava Schiltz (14:09) scored unassisted goals to start the second quarter to give UWL a 6-0 lead. UW-Eau Claire scored the next three goals to cut the lead to 6-3, but UWL's Schiltz and
Evie Brilz notched goals to give the Eagles an 8-3 lead. The Blugolds finished the half on a 3-0 run to cut the halftime deficit to 8-6. Â
Grace Willmott had four goals in the win.
UWL took a 9-6 lead on Pelletier's goal with 13:25 remaining on a
Megan Feeney assist, but UW-Eau Claire took a 10-9 lead after three quarters with four consecutive goals.Â
The Blugolds extended their lead to 11-9 with 13:12 left in the game, but the Eagles responded with four straight goals. Maloney's goal with 10:35 remaining cut it to 11-10 and the third goal of the game from Schiltz with 7:44 tied the contest. Maloney and Schiltz both scored on free position shots.Â
Emily Wrobbel gave UWL a 12-11 lead with 7:22 left off a Maloney assist and Willmott extended the lead to 13-11 with 4:02 remaining on Pelletier's third assist of the game. UW-Eau Claire cut it to 13-12 with :38 left, but the Blugolds' final shot with :03 remaining went wide right as UWL held on for the win.
UWL finished with 31 shots. Willmott led the Eagles with four goals while Schiltz finished with three. Pelletier had two goals and three assists. Maloney finished with two assists.
Abi Furlano earned the win with 10 saves and team-high five ground balls. Willmott had a team-leading five draw controls while
Julia Della Penna had three caused turnovers.
UW-Eau Claire totaled 30 shots with Victoria Shea leading the Blugolds with three goals. Peyton Gullickson, Alexie Romanelli and Reegan Werner each scored two goals. Lily Zygowicz finished with three assists. Alexandra Shea recorded nine saves.Â
UWL returns to action in the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) on Friday, May 3 at UW-River Falls at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will be the third-seed and face second-seed Colorado College or UW-River Falls.Â
