River Falls, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-River Falls Tuesday at Faye Perkins Softball Stadium. The Eagles took the opener, 9-0, and the nightcap, 9-0, both in five innings..
UWL improves to 17-17 overall and 3-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-River Falls drops to 10-16 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
In the opener, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Brooke Howard singled to start the game, stole second and went to third on
Cristin Casey's infield single. Howard later scored on
Jordyn McCormack's RBI ground out.
The Eagles added six runs in the fourth inning. Casey led-of with a walk and back-to-back-back doubles from
Kyra Lard, McCormack and
Abbey Bosch gave UWL a 4-0 advantage.
Lindsay Steien's single later scored Bosch and Howard delivered a two-run double knocking in Steien and Allyah Langrehr.
UWL added to its lead in the fifth after Lard and McCormack came in on
Ella Harris' single.
Elise Weinzierl (6-5) earned the victory, going 3.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out five.
Carmen Follette pitched 2.0 innings, recording two strikeouts.
UWL totaled 10 hits with Howard, Lard and McCormack each finishing with two. Lard and McCormack each scored two runs while Howard and McCormack had two RBI.
Maggie Wallin (5-7) suffered the loss for UW-River Falls, going 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs and one walk with three strikeouts. The Falcons had two hits in the game.
The Eagles scored twice in the top of the first in the nightcap. Casey walked with one out and stole second. After Lard drew a walk, both runners stole a base to move into scoring position. McCormack singled home Casey with the first run and Lard came in on Bosch's ground out.
Lard hit a solo home run in the third to give UWL a 3-0 advantage. The Eagles added four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. In the fourth, Howard's single scored Langrehr for a 4-0 lead and Howard then scored on a passed ball. Lard later hit an RBI single and
Lauren Winkler drew a bases-loaded walk. Lard had an RBI double in the fifth while McCormack drove in a run after reaching base on an error.
Remington Stark (8-3) picked up the victory, pitching 3.0 innings allowing two hits while striking out six.
Ally Eden and
Brynne Bieri each pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit with Bieri recording two strikeouts.
UWL finished with 10 hits in the nightcap as Lard finished 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI and a home run. Casey went 2-for-2 with two runs while McCormack finished with two RBI and Howard two runs.
Lindsey Duggan (2-4) took the loss for UW-River Falls. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, three runs and six walks with one strikeout. Four different players recorded a hit for the Falcons.
UWL returns to action Saturday, April 27 hosting 22nd-ranked UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at North Campus Field.
