UWL Allows Two Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at Dubuque; Won Seven of Last Nine Games

Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Monday afternoon at the UD Softball Field. The Eagles took the opener, 11-1 in six innings, and the nightcap, 9-1. UWL improves to 14-14 on the season while Dubuque (Iowa) drops to 6-21. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener. Brooke Howard led-off the game with a single and went to second on Cristin Casey's sacrifice bunt. Howard went to third on a passed ball and later scored on Abbey Bosch's two-out single.

The Eagles tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it 3-0. In the third, Howard singled, stole second and went to third on a Casey single. Howard came in on Kyra Lard's sacrifice fly. Joette Kassa scored on a Dubuque (Iowa) error in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage. 

UWL added five runs in the fifth. Casey scored on Lard's second sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Renee Tooze and Lindsay Steien drew bases-loaded walks for a 6-0 lead and Howard's two-run single extended the lead to 8-0.

Dubuque (Iowa) got on the board with its lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Kaitlyn Powell doubled to lead-off the inning and went to third on Bella Allison's single. Powell later came in on Katie Hayes' single. 

The Eagles added three runs in the sixth. Kassa had a bases-loaded walk to score Jordyn McCormack and Steien's two-run single knocked in Aliyah Langrehr and Kassa.  

Elise Weinzierl (5-4) earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three. The Eagles finished with 10 hits as Howard went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Casey was 2-for-2 while Steien finished with three RBI and Lard two. Kassa scored three runs and Langrehr two. RBI

Ally Gullette (1-3) suffered the loss for Dubuque (Iowa), pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs (six earned) and three walks while striking out two. The Spartans had seven hits with Bailey Ford going 2-for-3. 

Dubuque (Iowa) scored in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. Powell gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead scoring on an Eagles' error. 

UWL took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Lard and McCormack hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning and tie the game, 1-1. McCormack later scored on Maddy Bornbach's two-out single to give UWL a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles added two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh. Nicole Zoellner reached on a fielder's choice to score Lard for a 3-1 lead and a Marissa Pease two-out single scored McCormack to extend it to 4-1. In the seventh, Lard had an RBI double, McCormack an RBI off an error and Zoellner a two-run single. Lard also scored in the inning on another Spartans' error. 

Remington Stark (6-2) picked up the victory, allowing five hits, one run (unearned) and two walks with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. UWL totaled 11 hits as Lard finished 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. McCormack scored three times and finished with two RBI. Zoellner finished with three RBI. 

Jaelyn Blakemore (1-7) took the loss. She pitched a complete-game, going 7.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, nine runs (four earned) and one walk with two strikeouts. Five different Spartans had a hit. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 17 hosting UW-Eau Claire in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
